What this site is
Smart Home Assistant is an independent UK publication covering Home Assistant, Matter, Zigbee, smart heating, cameras, and the full range of smart home hardware available in Britain. Every guide is written with UK prices, UK retailers, and UK-specific considerations in mind — energy tariffs, Ofgem rules, Ring vs Nest availability — not repurposed US content with the dollar sign swapped out.
The site runs no sponsored posts and has no PR relationships that could influence coverage. Manufacturers can pitch products for review (see for manufacturers), but a free unit never buys coverage, a positive review, or a higher score. Affiliate commissions (from Amazon.co.uk, Awin, and CJ Affiliate) cover running costs, but they never determine which products are recommended or how they are scored. Who writes it
All content is written by Sepehr. Sepehr is a Head of Engineering leading a 20-plus-person organisation, has been coding since age 13, and has worked professionally in software since 2009 across backend, frontend, and infrastructure. He has been setting up and running smart home systems for about a decade.
Critically, Sepehr runs everything he writes about. His homelab currently includes Home Assistant on dedicated hardware, a Zigbee USB dongle with Zigbee2MQTT and Mosquitto MQTT, a Ring doorbell integrated via ring-mqtt, Frigate NVR running on an OpenVINO GPU for local video processing, face recognition via Double-Take and DeepStack, a full media stack, a Cloudflare Tunnel, Traefik reverse proxy, Prometheus and Grafana monitoring, Pi-hole DNS filtering, and nightly encrypted S3 backups. This is not a hobbyist weekend project — it is a production-grade setup that has been running continuously and evolving for years.
That level of hands-on experience is what separates this site from most smart home publications, which are written by generalist tech journalists who have never actually configured a Zigbee mesh or debugged an MQTT broker.
What makes it different
- Real homelab testing. Guides are informed by actual setup experience, not unboxing sessions. If something is finicky to configure or unreliable after a firmware update, that will be in the article.
- UK pricing and availability. Prices are sourced from amazon.co.uk, Screwfix, Argos, and UK-specific retailers. US-only products are flagged as such.
- No AI slop. Articles are AI-assisted drafts that Sepehr reviews, edits, and fact-checks before publication. The technical judgement and the final call on every claim is human.
- Primary sources. Factual claims cite manufacturer specifications, Home Assistant documentation, Which? reports, Ofgem guidance, or gov.uk — not Reddit threads or YouTube videos.
- No brand deals. No sponsored content, ever. No manufacturer has paid to appear on this site in any form.
How we work
Each article starts with a defined question or use case a UK buyer is likely to have. Sepehr researches the topic using primary sources, tests relevant integrations and hardware in his own setup where possible, and drafts the article. An AI assistant is used to help structure drafts and surface potential gaps; Sepehr then reviews every sentence, corrects errors, and adds first-hand detail the AI could not have known. Every factual claim is verified against a cited source before publication.
