What affiliate links are
Some links on Smart Home Assistant are affiliate links. This means that if you click a link and subsequently make a purchase on the retailer's website, we may earn a small commission. The price you pay is exactly the same whether you use our link or navigate to the retailer directly — you pay nothing extra, and the commission comes from the retailer's margin, not from you.
Affiliate income helps cover the costs of running this site: hosting, domain, software subscriptions, and the time spent researching and writing. It is what allows the site to exist without paywall, subscriptions, or advertising networks.
Which programmes we participate in
Smart Home Assistant is a participant in the following affiliate programmes:
- Amazon Associates (amazon.co.uk). Links to Amazon UK product pages may be Amazon Associates links. Amazon Associates is operated by Amazon EU S.à r.l.
- Awin network. Some retailer links are tracked through the Awin affiliate network, which operates on behalf of a wide range of UK retailers.
- CJ Affiliate (formerly Commission Junction). Some links are tracked through the CJ Affiliate network.
Not all links on this site are affiliate links. Links to Home Assistant documentation, Ofgem, gov.uk, manufacturer support pages, and other informational sources are never affiliate links.
How to identify affiliate links
Affiliate links carry the HTML attributes rel="nofollow sponsored", which is the standard machine-readable disclosure required by Google's webmaster guidelines. In practice, the easiest signal is context: if a link goes to a product on a retailer site such as Amazon, Currys, or Screwfix, it is likely an affiliate link. Links that go to documentation, news, or reference sources are not.
The editorial firewall
Affiliate commission does not influence which products are recommended, how they are scored, or what is written about them. A product that earns a higher commission rate does not receive a more favourable review. A product that earns no commission at all is just as likely to be recommended if it is the best option for the reader.
Recommendations are based on the criteria described in the editorial policy: UK availability, Home Assistant compatibility, setup complexity, reliability, and value for money. Affiliate economics play no role in that assessment.
