Independence

Smart Home Assistant accepts no sponsored content, advertorials, or paid placements of any kind. No manufacturer, PR agency, or retailer has ever paid to appear on this site, and none ever will. Most products reviewed here have been purchased or are already part of the author's own homelab setup. We also accept review units pitched by manufacturers (see for manufacturers), but receiving a free unit never guarantees coverage, a positive review, or any influence over the score a product receives — a pitched product is held to exactly the same methodology below as one we bought ourselves.

Affiliate commissions are earned when readers click links and make purchases, but these commissions play no role in which products are covered, which are recommended, or how they are scored. The affiliate firewall is absolute: a product that earns a higher commission is not given a higher score, and a product that earns no commission is not excluded from consideration. Who writes the content

All articles are written by Sepehr. Sepehr is a Head of Engineering with over 15 years of professional software experience and approximately a decade of hands-on smart home experience. He has been running Home Assistant continuously for several years, along with Zigbee2MQTT, Frigate NVR, Mosquitto MQTT, ring-mqtt, Cloudflare Tunnel, Traefik, Prometheus, Grafana, Pi-hole, and a full media automation stack on self-hosted hardware.

This is not aspirational knowledge. Sepehr writes about systems he actually runs, problems he has actually encountered, and solutions he has actually validated. That first-hand experience is the foundation of the site's credibility.

Articles on this site are produced with AI assistance. An AI language model is used to help structure drafts, generate initial outlines, and surface potential gaps in coverage. Every article is then reviewed, edited, and fact-checked by Sepehr before publication. Claims are verified against primary sources; passages that cannot be verified are removed or flagged. The technical judgement, the final editorial call on every recommendation, and accountability for accuracy rest entirely with Sepehr, not with any AI system.

We disclose this because we think readers deserve to know how their information is produced. AI-assisted does not mean unreviewed; every published article reflects human editorial oversight.

Review methodology

When evaluating smart home products, we assess the following factors in roughly this order of weight:

UK availability and price. A product unavailable from UK retailers or priced prohibitively for the UK market is noted as such. We do not pretend US Amazon prices apply.
Home Assistant compatibility. Whether the product works locally (no cloud required), integrates via a first-party HA integration or HACS, and whether that integration is actively maintained.
Setup complexity. How difficult it is to get working for a capable but non-expert user. Steps are documented accurately, including the parts that are awkward.
Reliability. Does it stay connected? Does it survive firmware updates? Are there known failure modes? Long-term ownership experience is weighted above first-week impressions.
Privacy and local operation. Whether the product can function without sending data to manufacturer cloud services, and whether it does so by default.

Source standards

Every factual claim in an article is supported by a cited source. Acceptable primary sources include: manufacturer technical specifications and datasheets; official Home Assistant documentation and integration pages; Which? consumer research; Ofgem guidance and publications; UK government sources (gov.uk, MHCLG, DESNZ); and peer-reviewed research where relevant.

We do not cite Reddit threads, YouTube videos, or anonymous forum posts as evidence for factual claims. Community experience is useful context, but it is not a substitute for verified primary sources.

Content freshness

Smart home hardware and software change rapidly. Prices change, integrations break, and firmware updates alter behaviour. Articles display their original publication date and an updated date where a substantive revision has been made. We review articles periodically and aim to update them when material changes occur.

Corrections policy

If you believe an article contains a factual error, send the details to me@sepehr.co.uk. Please include the article URL and a link to the source you believe contradicts the claim. Corrections are investigated and, where warranted, published promptly. A note is added to the article indicating what was changed and when.

We do not silently edit articles to remove errors without acknowledgement. If we got something wrong, we say so.
