Key takeaways

  • Withings+ is required for Withings accounts created after 12 October 2026 that share data with a free-plan API app.
  • Accounts created before the cutoff are unaffected, so existing Home Assistant Withings setups should keep working.
  • Withings+ costs £8.95 a month or £89.50 a year in the UK, per Withings' support page.
  • The Home Assistant docs give the cutoff as 11 October 2026, a day earlier than Withings' own portal.

Withings+ is now required for Home Assistant users who create a new Withings account from 12 October 2026 and want to share data through the free developer API. Existing accounts are unaffected. Withings+ costs £8.95 a month in the UK, so a new scale owner now pays to use the integration.

What has changed with Withings+?

Withings' developer portal says Withings+ "becomes required on the Start for Free API plan" from 12 October 2026. Withings accounts created after that date need a membership to share health data with an app on the free plan, and that includes apps that are already live. Accounts created before the date are unaffected, and the portal says an Enterprise plan lifts the requirement for specific use cases.

The Home Assistant Withings integration page now carries the same warning, but gives the cutoff as accounts created after 11 October 2026. The one-day difference is probably time-zone wording, but it is a reason to treat the date as approximate rather than exact if you are creating an account close to it.

Why does this matter for Home Assistant users?

It matters if you are about to buy a Withings scale, blood pressure monitor or sleep mat and plan to pull the readings into Home Assistant. The official integration does not talk to your device directly. As the Home Assistant docs describe, you create a free Withings developer account, register an application and paste its client ID and secret into Home Assistant. That developer app is the "free-plan app" the new rule applies to.

The integration is cloud push: Withings sends updates to Home Assistant by webhook, which needs your instance reachable over HTTPS or, for Home Assistant Cloud users, an automatically registered cloudhook. So the data already depends on Withings' servers; the change adds a recurring fee for new accounts on top of the hardware price. If you want data with no cloud account at all, a Bluetooth scale is the alternative, and our best smart scales UK guide compares the local options.

How much does Withings+ cost in the UK?

Withings' support page lists Withings+ at £8.95 a month or £89.50 a year in the UK, roughly £7.46 a month on the annual plan. Trial terms vary by purchase route: buying a qualifying device from the Withings web store includes a month free, while subscribing in the app offers a shorter trial. One Withings bundle page showed £9.95 a month, so confirm the price at checkout.

That is ongoing cost you would not have faced a fortnight ago just to see your weight on a dashboard. Withings+ does include features inside Withings' own app, so some owners will want it anyway, but it is a poor deal if the integration is the only reason.

What should you do now?

If you already run the Withings integration on an older account, there is nothing to do, though it is sensible to avoid deleting and recreating the developer app or the account, because a fresh account would fall under the new rule. If you are buying a new Withings device and already hold an older Withings account, check which account the developer app is tied to before assuming either way; Withings has not published that detail in the pages we reviewed.

Starting from scratch, weigh the Withings+ fee against a local Bluetooth scale. Our Home Assistant 2026.10 round-up covers the rest of this month's release.

What don't we know yet?

Withings has not said whether the existing-account exemption is permanent, whether users on regional Withings sites are treated differently, or what happens to an exempt account if you later delete and recreate its developer app. We have not tested a new-account setup ourselves, so the exact error a new user sees without Withings+ is unverified. Treat any statement beyond the two pages cited here as unconfirmed.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need Withings+ to use Withings with Home Assistant?
Only if your Withings account was created after the cutoff. Withings' developer portal says Withings+ becomes required on the free Start for Free API plan from 12 October 2026, and accounts created after that date need a membership to share health data with a free-plan app. The Home Assistant Withings integration page repeats the warning but dates it to accounts created after 11 October 2026. Accounts created earlier are unaffected, according to Withings. The caveat is that Withings has not published every edge case, such as what happens if you delete and recreate your developer app, so check the developer portal before changing anything on a working setup.
How much does Withings+ cost in the UK?
Withings' support page lists Withings+ at £8.95 per month or £89.50 per year in the UK, which works out at roughly £7.46 a month on the annual plan. Buying a qualifying device from the Withings web store includes one month free, while subscribing directly in the app offers a shorter two-week trial, though terms vary by product bundle. We saw one Body Scan bundle page quoting £9.95 a month, so the price shown at checkout is the one that counts. The membership also unlocks features inside Withings' own app, which may justify the cost for some owners but is poor value if the Home Assistant integration is your only reason.
Will my existing Withings integration stop working?
Based on Withings' developer portal, no. It says accounts created before the cutoff are unaffected, so a Home Assistant Withings integration that is already authorised on an older account should carry on as before. We have not seen any statement that existing accounts will be switched over later, but Withings has not promised the exemption is permanent either. The sensible precaution is to leave a working setup alone: avoid removing the integration, deleting the developer app or recreating your Withings account, because a new account would fall under the Withings+ requirement. If something does break, check the Home Assistant integration page and the Withings developer portal first.

›How we researched this

Claims in this article are checked against primary sources — manufacturer specifications, official documentation, Which? research, Ofgem guidance, or gov.uk — rather than forum threads or video reviews. Where the author has direct hands-on experience with a product (most Home Assistant, Zigbee, and home-networking gear is running in his own homelab), that is stated explicitly in the text.

For categories outside that personal setup — such as boilers, heat pumps, and other areas that are traditionally a heating engineer's domain — verdicts are built from cross-referenced manufacturer data, published lab results, and vetted expert and owner reviews rather than a claim of personal hands-on testing. See the editorial policy for the full methodology.
