Verified September 2026
Aqara finally shipped proper RTSP: flick it on in the app and this 2.6K IP65 camera streams into go2rtc/Frigate with no subscription. At £159.98–£159.99 it's £56-80 more than Reolink's Duo 2 (£103.99) or Elite (£79.99), and the difference isn't really the camera — it's the Zigbee/Thread hub bolted on. If you already run a border router and Zigbee coordinator, that's dead weight, not a bonus; buy this only if you genuinely need one more radio in a dead spot. Two-way audio and a 3W spotlight cover deterrence, but there's no dedicated siren like Reolink's duo cameras carry — for driveway/garden coverage the Elite is simply the sharper buy.
In Home Assistant
| Control | Type | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Camera | Camera | Local RTSP feed with selectable resolution profiles; add as a generic camera or restream via go2rtc/Frigate. Must be switched on in the Aqara app first — off by default. |
| Person/object detection | Binary sensor (derived) | Not exposed by Aqara itself — created by pointing Frigate's detector at the RTSP stream. |
| Bridged child devices | Bridge (Matter/HomeKit) | Sensors, plugs and lights paired to the hub's built-in Zigbee radio surface in HA only through Matter or HomeKit bridging, not ZHA/Z2M. |
| Thread border router | Infrastructure | Extends Thread mesh coverage for Matter-over-Thread devices elsewhere in HA; runs alongside any existing HA-managed border router, doesn't replace it. |
| HomeKit camera (fallback) | Camera | Available if RTSP is left off or blocked by network policy, but caps resolution well below the native RTSP profile. |
RTSP lives on port 8554 with three selectable resolution profiles behind an app-generated, non-editable username/password that survives a factory reset — pull the highest-res feed into go2rtc for Frigate recording and a lower-res feed separately for detection so you're not opening duplicate connections to the same camera. Once enabled, the stream keeps working even with the Aqara app removed and internet blocked at the router, confirming there's no cloud hop once RTSP is on. The Zigbee/Thread/Matter side is not a HA coordinator: child devices pair through Aqara's own ecosystem and only reach HA indirectly via Matter Server or a HomeKit bridge, so treat it as a bridge rather than a ZHA/Z2M substitute.
