Our verdict
The default cheap Alexa speaker: £79.99 now, with a decent spherical speaker for its size and Bluetooth. Fine as a kitchen or bedside voice remote. For Home Assistant it is cloud-only; control through Alexa Media Player is unofficial and can break. If music quality matters, spend the same on a Sonos Era 100 on offer instead.
What can Home Assistant control on the Amazon Echo Dot (5th Gen)?
| Control | Type | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Media player | Media player | Play/pause, skip and volume with track info, via the HACS Alexa Media Player integration. |
No official Home Assistant integration for Echo playback. The community Alexa Media Player custom integration (installed through HACS) controls Echo devices as media players using Amazon's unofficial Alexa API, and its README warns Amazon may cut off access at any time. Expect occasional re-authentication; treat Echo hardware as something you control from Alexa, with HA as the optional extra.

Frequently asked questions
- Does the Amazon Echo Dot (5th Gen) work with Home Assistant locally?
- Partly. The Amazon Echo Dot (5th Gen) connects to Home Assistant through a community integration installed through HACS (alexa_media_player), which relies on the Amazon cloud. It works in Home Assistant, but commands go via the internet and stop working during an outage of your connection or the Amazon service.
- Which protocol does the Amazon Echo Dot (5th Gen) use, and do I need a hub?
- The Amazon Echo Dot (5th Gen) uses Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. To pair it with Home Assistant you need no hub — it joins your Wi-Fi network directly; or a Bluetooth adapter on your Home Assistant host or an ESPHome Bluetooth proxy. Amazon's own hub is not required when you integrate through a community integration installed through HACS (alexa_media_player).
