Smart Home Assistant

Smart wall switches that work with Home Assistant

Not to be confused with the relay modules a few pages back — these are finished retrofit switches that replace your existing UK light switch plate entirely, no hiding a module behind the back box. Zigbee, Matter-over-Thread and Z-Wave options here, all verified for UK use, with the same no-neutral caveat that matters for anything pre-2000s: check what's actually in your back box before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a smart wall switch and a relay module?

A relay module (see Relays & dimmer modules) hides inside the back box behind your existing physical switch, which stays dumb but still works. A smart wall switch replaces the whole faceplate — the switch itself becomes the smart device, with its own Zigbee/Thread/Z-Wave radio. Pick a switch if you want a modern-looking plate and don't mind rewiring the front; pick a module if you want to keep your existing switches exactly as they are.

Do smart wall switches need a neutral wire in the UK?

It depends on the model. No-neutral versions (like the Aqara H1 no-neutral) work on old UK lighting circuits with only live and switched-live at the switch, by passing a tiny current through the bulb when off — fine for LEDs in most cases but check compatibility. With-neutral versions are more reliable but only fit back boxes that actually have a neutral wired in, which is common in newer UK builds.

Are Aqara or Fibaro smart switches better for Home Assistant?

Aqara's H-series switches are the cheaper, more flexible pick — Zigbee models pair straight into Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA with no hub, and the newer H2 adds a genuine Matter-over-Thread mode. Fibaro's Walli range runs on Z-Wave instead, which some UK users prefer for mesh reliability in RF-noisy homes, at a higher price point.
