Our verdict

The wired-camera answer for people who want recordings on a disk in the cupboard rather than a subscription: four 8MP PoE bullet cameras with 5x optical zoom, an 8-channel NVR and a 2TB drive in one box, with the NVR's own RLN8-410 model on Home Assistant's tested list. Reolink says the kit holds about 8 days of footage from all four cameras at the default bit rate, so that is the real retention, not 'weeks'. The catch is the install, not the software: you are pulling Ethernet to every camera position (18 m cables are supplied), and the NVR is a closed box you add cameras to rather than a general PoE switch. Note the article names 'RLK8/RLK16'; this record is the 4-camera RLK8-811B4 that the article's Amazon link points to.

What can Home Assistant control on the Reolink RLK8-811B4 4K PoE NVR Kit?

ControlTypeWhat it does
Camera streamsCameraPer-channel streams; RTSP is the only protocol that carries the 4K H.265 stream.
Motion and AI detectionBinary sensorMotion plus AI detections where the camera supports them, delivered by TCP push where available.
NVR recordingSwitchGlobal Record switch on the NVR; a channel only records when both the global and channel switches are on.
FirmwareUpdateUpdate entities for the NVR and cameras.

Built into Home Assistant Core as the reolink integration (Local Push; the docs rate it Platinum). Point it at the NVR's IP and the cameras appear as channels with motion, AI-detection (where the camera supports it) and many switch, number, select and update entities; some are disabled by default. Catches from the docs: cameras behind an NVR are polled every 10 seconds each (60 s minimum total), the NVR has global Record, Push, Email and FTP switches that must be on alongside each channel's own, and HA needs ports 80, 443, 554 (RTSP), 1935, 8000 (ONVIF) and 9000 reachable. Update to the latest firmware from Reolink's download centre before setup because the app often misses it, and use a local login rather than a Reolink-account (cloud-bound) device. For 4K use the RTSP stream; RTMP and FLV do not carry it, and H.265 will not play in many browsers, so the H.264 'Fluent' stream is the one to use on dashboards.
