Ring Outdoor Cam (2nd Gen)
- Wi-Fi
Verified August 2026
Ring's mid-tier outdoor pick at £99.99 — a real step up from the plug-in Indoor Cam if you need weatherproofing, but think hard before it over the cheaper battery Stick Up Cam or the pricier Outdoor Cam Plus already covered here: you're paying for Retinal 2K and 6x zoom, not for anything that changes the Home Assistant story, which is still cloud-only with no RTSP path regardless of which Ring outdoor camera you buy. One genuine hardware win over the plug-in Indoor Cam is the built-in siren — HA's ring integration does expose a siren switch for it, 30-second auto-off, something the Indoor Cam simply can't do. Ring sells this as one SKU with a battery-and-mains choice at purchase (mains needs a separate hardwire kit), not two separate listings the way the video doorbells split — so pick your power source once and move on. If local RTSP recording into Frigate matters more to you than Ring's ecosystem and colour night vision, the Reolink Argus 4 Pro is a genuinely local battery/solar alternative for not much more, once you've budgeted for a Reolink Home Hub.
In Home Assistant
| Control | Type | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Live view | Camera | Cloud-relayed stream; no local RTSP/ONVIF path exists for this camera regardless of battery or plug-in power source. |
| Last recording | Camera | Snapshot/clip of the most recent motion event, pulled from Ring cloud storage; full clip history needs a Ring Home subscription. |
| Motion detection | Switch | Toggles the camera's motion-triggered event capture on/off. |
| Siren | Switch | Triggers the onboard siren for a fixed 30 seconds before the integration turns it off automatically — not present on the plug-in Indoor Cam in this catalogue, which has no siren hardware. |
| Battery | Sensor (%) | Only populated when running on the Quick Release Battery Pack; absent when hardwired via the separate plug-in kit. |
| Zoom control | Unsupported | The 6x Enhanced Zoom is a Ring-app-only digital zoom feature with no corresponding HA entity or service call. |
This is Ring's standard cloud-polling ring integration, exactly as with every other Ring camera in this catalogue — no RTSP/ONVIF path exists, and live view is relayed through Ring's servers rather than pulled directly off the device. The one entity this camera gets that the plug-in Indoor Cam doesn't is a siren switch: HA's ring integration creates a switch for any camera with onboard siren hardware, and this Outdoor Cam has it, so a motion automation can trigger a 30-second siren burst — the integration hard-limits it to 30 seconds and turns it off automatically rather than letting an automation hold it on. 6x Enhanced Zoom is a Ring-app-only feature; there's no HA-exposed control or entity for it, so "zoom in" isn't something an automation or dashboard can do — you get the same fixed 140°/85° framing on every snapshot and stream HA pulls. Because Wi-Fi is 2.4GHz-only (no 5GHz band), expect the same latency and reliability profile as Ring's other battery cameras on a congested 2.4GHz network — nothing HA-side to configure around it beyond the usual advice to keep it on a dedicated SSID or mesh node with a strong signal.
