The cheapest sensible outdoor camera for a UK Home Assistant setup: mains-powered so it streams 24/7 over RTSP/ONVIF into HA or Frigate, unlike battery cams that sleep between clips. Only 1080p, but at ~£33 that's a fair trade for full local control and IP65 weatherproofing. Colour night vision reaches 30m, and there's a built-in siren with dual spotlights Frigate can trigger as a deterrent. The Reolink Duo 2 beats it on paper — 4K dual-lens, two-way audio, IP67 — but costs three times as much; only step up if wide-angle coverage or resolution really matters. Since it needs mains power, plan the cable run to an outdoor socket before buying.

The native tplink integration only surfaces a cloud-relayed camera entity plus a couple of switches and a pan/tilt service — it doesn't touch RTSP/ONVIF at all, so getting a 24/7 local stream into HA or Frigate means adding the C500 a second time as a plain RTSP/ONVIF source once Third-Party Compatibility and a Camera Account are enabled under Advanced Settings in the Tapo app. Frigate users typically split the high-res stream for recording and a lower-res stream for detection, then bolt on a separate ONVIF integration to get motion-triggered pan/tilt working from HA, since the tplink integration's own pan/tilt service doesn't react to ONVIF motion events. One recurring gotcha: a firmware update pushed through the Tapo cloud app can silently re-lock RTSP/ONVIF access, so a stream that worked yesterday goes dark until Third-Party Compatibility is manually re-enabled.
