Our verdict
A 4G Cat 7 home router that has been around a long time and is very easy to find unlocked. It is cheap, takes external antennas and works well as a failover or a rural primary. It is an older design, so check the specific variant: Amazon lists several B535 versions at very different prices.
What can Home Assistant control on the Huawei B535?
Home Assistant core has a huawei_lte integration that works with devices reported working in the huawei-lte-api library, giving device trackers, signal sensors (RSRP, RSRQ, SINR), SMS and mobile-data switches. The docs do not name the B535, so check the library list for your variant.

Frequently asked questions
- Does the Huawei B535 work with Home Assistant locally?
- Yes. The Huawei B535 is controlled locally in Home Assistant through a built-in Home Assistant core integration (huawei_lte), so it keeps working if your internet connection or the Huawei cloud goes down. Control and state updates stay on your own network.
- Which protocol does the Huawei B535 use, and do I need a hub?
- The Huawei B535 uses Wi-Fi. To pair it with Home Assistant you need no hub — it joins your Wi-Fi network directly. Huawei's own hub is not required when you integrate through a built-in Home Assistant core integration (huawei_lte).
