Our verdict
QNAP's cheap 2-bay ARM NAS, and a fair alternative to the DS223 if you want a lower price and don't mind QTS. It is sold on Amazon UK directly by QNAP UK at £238 diskless, which is more reassuring than a marketplace seller on a product that holds your data. Home Assistant support exists but is thinner than Synology's: system, CPU, memory, volume, drive and network sensors only, no cameras or backup location. QTS has had a rougher security record than DSM, so keep it off the open internet and update it.
What can Home Assistant control on the QNAP TS-233?
| Control | Type | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Drive and volume sensors | Sensor | SMART status and usage for drives, volumes and shared folders. |
| CPU / memory / temperature | Sensor | Basic health telemetry for spotting a NAS that is running hot or thrashing. |
The core QNAP integration is local polling and gives system status and temperature, CPU, memory, volume, shared-folder, drive SMART and network sensors. It cannot authenticate against an account with two-factor authentication enabled, so use a dedicated account without 2FA, and on QTS 5 the account needs System Monitoring access and you must clear any login agreements in the web UI first. HA says most but not all QNAP models work, so confirm the TS-233 against the supported list.
