A genuinely clever bit of kit — one puck does the job of a door/window contact and a vibration/tilt/fall sensor, so it's brilliant for safes, mailboxes or garden gates where a normal two-part reed switch looks daft. It ships in Thread/Matter mode and needs switching to Zigbee in the Aqara app, and object-monitoring only exists on Zigbee. Don't be fooled by the "outdoor kit" branding — Aqara gives this sensor no IP rating and says outright it isn't waterproof; the bundled cover just keeps off direct rain, so mount it somewhere sheltered. Also handy strapped flat to a wheelie bin lid for a vibration alert if someone's rummaging through it overnight.
What can Home Assistant control on the Aqara Multi-State Sensor P100?
| Control | Type | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Contact | Binary sensor | Open/closed state, only active in Door/Window mode |
| Action | Event | Fires movement, vibration, tilt, triple_tap, fall, or static events — Object mode only, requires experimental_event_entities enabled |
| Orientation | Sensor | Reports face_up, face_down, vertical or tilt orientation of the monitored object |
| Device Mode | Select | Switches the sensor between Door/Window and Object monitoring (mutually exclusive) |
| Battery | Sensor (%) | Battery percentage from the CR2450 cell; first report can take up to 24 hours after pairing |
Zigbee2MQTT exposes: battery, voltage, device_mode (select), door_window_type, sensitivity, report_interval, orientation_detection, movement_detection, fall_detection, vibration_detection, triple_tap_detection, orientation, contact (binary_sensor, door/window mode only), device_posture, and an action event entity (movement, vibration, tilt, triple_tap, fall, static — Object mode only, requires 'experimental_event_entities' enabled in the Z2M HA integration). Before pairing, switch the device out of its default Thread/Matter mode into Zigbee via the Aqara Home app, then calibrate with 3 button presses (door/window closed for contact mode, sensor flat face-up for object mode). A useful automation: trigger on event.xxx_action == 'fall' for an object monitored this way (a medicine cabinet or safe) to fire an instant mobile notification — a case standard contact sensors can't cover.
Specs
| modes | Open/Close Monitoring or Object Monitoring (mutually exclusive, set via device_mode) |
|---|---|
| battery | CR2450 (3V), manufacturer claims 2-3 years in Zigbee mode |
| ip rating | None published — Aqara states the sensor is not waterproof and should avoid rain/water exposure; the bundled "outdoor kit" cover only shields against direct rain, it does not weatherproof the device for full outdoor exposure |
| dimensions | 45 x 31 x 13 mm |
| hub requirement | Object Monitoring mode needs an Aqara Zigbee hub or a Zigbee coordinator (Z2M/ZHA); Open/Close mode also works over Thread/Matter |
| operating humidity | 0-95% RH, non-condensing |
| sensitivity levels | 10 adjustable levels |
| operating temperature | -10°C to 55°C |

Frequently asked questions
- Does the Aqara Multi-State Sensor P100 work with Home Assistant locally?
- Yes. The Aqara Multi-State Sensor P100 is controlled locally in Home Assistant through Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA (Zigbee2MQTT (native, v2.9.2+)), so it keeps working if your internet connection or the Aqara cloud goes down. Control and state updates stay on your own network.
- Which protocol does the Aqara Multi-State Sensor P100 use, and do I need a hub?
- The Aqara Multi-State Sensor P100 uses Zigbee and Thread and Matter. To pair it with Home Assistant you need a Zigbee coordinator (for example a SkyConnect/ZBT-1 or Sonoff dongle) attached to your Home Assistant host; or a Thread border router (Home Assistant Connect ZBT-1, Apple TV 4K or a HomePod mini all work); or a Thread border router if it is Matter-over-Thread, or just your Wi-Fi network if it is Matter-over-Wi-Fi. Aqara's own hub is not required when you integrate through Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA (Zigbee2MQTT (native, v2.9.2+)).
- How much does the Aqara Multi-State Sensor P100 cost in the UK?
