IKEA MYGGSPRAY Wireless Motion Sensor
- Thread
- Matter
Verified September 2026
IKEA's 2026 Matter-over-Thread replacement for the Vallhorn, and at £7 it's still the cheapest way to scatter motion sensing around a UK home — you'll need a Thread border router (ZBT-1, Apollo, or an Apple/Google hub) since it won't talk to HA on its own. Two AAA batteries (IKEA recommends its own LADDA rechargeables) last around 15 months, and the IP67 rating means it's happy on a covered porch as well as indoors, not just a hallway ceiling. It's only rated for mounting up to 2m high, so skip it for anything above a standard doorway or stairwell.
In Home Assistant
| Control | Type | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Occupancy | Binary sensor | PIR motion state exposed via the Matter occupancy cluster. |
| Illuminance | Sensor | Built-in ambient light reading from the same endpoint, usable to gate lighting automations on darkness without a separate light sensor — readings run low versus other brands. |
| Battery | Sensor (%) | Battery percentage reported over Matter. |
| Battery voltage | Sensor | Raw voltage, more granular than the percentage estimate for tracking discharge curves. |
| Identify | Button | Triggers the device's identify behaviour for locating a specific sensor during setup or troubleshooting. |
Unlike a plain PIR, this sensor's Matter occupancy cluster carries a paired illuminance measurement, so a motion-AND-dark lighting automation works without adding a separate lux sensor — but its lux readings run noticeably lower than dedicated sensors from other brands, so don't port a threshold tuned elsewhere, and some units have hit a stuck-low-reading bug that needs a re-pair to clear. The dropout issue mentioned in our own editor note is tracked as a documented core regression: sensors disconnect a few hours after pairing on certain HA releases even though the same devices stay stable in the IKEA and Google apps, and the only known workaround is pulling and reinserting the battery. Because it self-supplies ambient light data, it suits a hallway or porch fixture that scales brightness with dusk/dawn rather than flipping a flat on/off, freeing up the endpoint a separate light sensor would otherwise need.
