Only worth buying if you already run a Hue Bridge: it is the Hue Secure system's contact sensor and is priced above generic Zigbee ones at roughly £33. On its own it does nothing, as it needs the Bridge. If you do own one, it keeps the sensor inside one ecosystem and you avoid a second Zigbee network.
What can Home Assistant control on the Philips Hue Secure Contact Sensor?
| Control | Type | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Contact | Binary sensor | Open or closed state |
| Battery | Sensor (%) | Battery level via the Hue Bridge |
Home Assistant's Hue integration talks to the Bridge over the local API, so the sensor appears as a contact binary sensor with a battery sensor. It does not pair directly to a Zigbee dongle in any supported way, so the Bridge is mandatory. Hue Secure alarm features stay inside the Hue app.

Frequently asked questions
- Does the Philips Hue Secure Contact Sensor work with Home Assistant locally?
- Yes. The Philips Hue Secure Contact Sensor is controlled locally in Home Assistant through a certified "Works with Home Assistant" integration (Philips Hue), so it keeps working if your internet connection or the Philips Hue cloud goes down. Control and state updates stay on your own network.
- Which protocol does the Philips Hue Secure Contact Sensor use, and do I need a hub?
- The Philips Hue Secure Contact Sensor uses Zigbee. To pair it with Home Assistant you need a Zigbee coordinator (for example a SkyConnect/ZBT-1 or Sonoff dongle) attached to your Home Assistant host. Philips Hue's own hub is not required when you integrate through a certified "Works with Home Assistant" integration (Philips Hue).
