Our verdict

A genuinely portable Sonos: IP67, about 10 hours of playback and Bluetooth 5.2 for when you leave Wi-Fi. At home it behaves like any Sonos speaker with AirPlay 2 and Alexa or Sonos Voice Control. HA exposes its battery level and power source, which is the one portable speaker where that works well. It does not replace a proper bookshelf speaker for the same money.

What can Home Assistant control on the Sonos Roam 2?

ControlTypeWhat it does
Media playerMedia playerPlayback, volume, grouping, play_media and TTS announcements; supports Sonos favourites as sources.
Bass / TrebleNumberEQ levels exposed for every Sonos device.
Loudness / Crossfade / Touch controls / Status lightSwitchPer-speaker toggles available on all devices.
AlarmsSwitchOne switch per Sonos alarm; leave about a second between rapid updates or the speaker can drop offline until a power cycle.
Battery level / power sourceSensorRoam battery percentage and whether it is on battery, charging ring or USB (fully supported on S2).

Sonos integrates natively in Home Assistant over the LAN (local push, per the HA docs), with no cloud account needed for control. Media player entities handle playback, volume, grouping and announcements. Prerequisite: UPnP enabled in the Sonos app, and HA must reach the speakers on TCP port 1400 or it falls back to slow polling.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Sonos Roam 2 work with Home Assistant locally?
Yes. The Sonos Roam 2 is controlled locally in Home Assistant through a built-in Home Assistant core integration (sonos), so it keeps working if your internet connection or the Sonos cloud goes down. Control and state updates stay on your own network.
Which protocol does the Sonos Roam 2 use, and do I need a hub?
The Sonos Roam 2 uses Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. To pair it with Home Assistant you need no hub — it joins your Wi-Fi network directly; or a Bluetooth adapter on your Home Assistant host or an ESPHome Bluetooth proxy. Sonos's own hub is not required when you integrate through a built-in Home Assistant core integration (sonos).
