Our verdict

A Wi-Fi GU10 that needs no hub and talks to Home Assistant over your LAN through the built-in LIFX integration, so it keeps working if LIFX's cloud is unreachable. The catch is the usual Wi-Fi-bulb one: every spot is its own client on your router, so a ceiling of six or eight of them is a lot of DHCP leases and a lot of 2.4 GHz chatter compared with a Zigbee downlight set. Setup is trivial if Home Assistant is on the same subnet as the bulbs; put the bulbs on another VLAN and you must add each by IP.

What can Home Assistant control on the LIFX GU10 Colour & White?

ControlTypeWhat it does
LightLightOn/off, brightness, colour and colour temperature, plus Pulse and Colour loop effects.
IdentifyButtonFlashes the bulb so you can tell which spot is which in a multi-bulb room.
RestartButtonReboots a misbehaving bulb without touching the switch.
Signal strengthSensorRSSI diagnostic, disabled by default; useful for finding spots with weak Wi-Fi.

Built into Core as 'lifx', Local Polling every 10 seconds: changes made from the LIFX app or a wall switch can take up to 10 seconds to show in Home Assistant. Exposes a light entity (brightness, colour, Pulse and Colour loop effects), Identify and Restart buttons, and a disabled-by-default RSSI diagnostic sensor. Discovery is by UDP broadcast, Zeroconf, HomeKit and DHCP and needs Home Assistant on the same subnet; for bulbs on another network add them by host. Upgrading from very old setups required re-adding each light as its own config entry. The HA docs also point to HomeKit Controller if you want push updates and less network traffic.

Frequently asked questions

Does the LIFX GU10 Colour & White work with Home Assistant locally?
Yes. The LIFX GU10 Colour & White is controlled locally in Home Assistant through a built-in Home Assistant core integration (lifx), so it keeps working if your internet connection or the LIFX cloud goes down. Control and state updates stay on your own network.
Which protocol does the LIFX GU10 Colour & White use, and do I need a hub?
The LIFX GU10 Colour & White uses Wi-Fi. To pair it with Home Assistant you need no hub — it joins your Wi-Fi network directly. LIFX's own hub is not required when you integrate through a built-in Home Assistant core integration (lifx).
