Our verdict

Hue's tunable-white flagship ceiling light, and the one to buy if you want it to just work. It sits on Hue's Zigbee mesh, so with a Bridge it is local and instant in Home Assistant through the official hue integration, and the dimmer switch in the box means a guest can still turn it on without an app. White only, no colour, which is the trade against the cheaper Devote S. Amazon UK lists the silver version at around £155, but the black and white versions are priced very differently, so check the colour before you click. It is a big, premium fitting; for a small room it will be overkill.

What can Home Assistant control on the Philips Hue Being Ceiling Light?

Added through the Hue Bridge it appears as a standard colour-temperature light entity, plus the supplied dimmer switch as a Hue remote with button events you can use as automation triggers. It also pairs over Bluetooth without a Bridge, but that route gives you no Home Assistant control, so budget for a Bridge if HA is the point.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Philips Hue Being Ceiling Light work with Home Assistant locally?
Yes. The Philips Hue Being Ceiling Light is controlled locally in Home Assistant through a built-in Home Assistant core integration (hue), so it keeps working if your internet connection or the Philips Hue cloud goes down. Control and state updates stay on your own network.
Which protocol does the Philips Hue Being Ceiling Light use, and do I need a hub?
The Philips Hue Being Ceiling Light uses Zigbee and Bluetooth. To pair it with Home Assistant you need a Zigbee coordinator (for example a SkyConnect/ZBT-1 or Sonoff dongle) attached to your Home Assistant host; or a Bluetooth adapter on your Home Assistant host or an ESPHome Bluetooth proxy. Philips Hue's own hub is not required when you integrate through a built-in Home Assistant core integration (hue).
