Our verdict

The cheapest way into a Hue ceiling light, and unlike the Being it does colour as well as tunable white. At 29 cm it suits a bedroom, hallway or box room rather than a big living room, where you'd want the larger Devote sizes or something brighter. Amazon's own listing says Matter compatible and that a Bridge is optional but unlocks the fuller feature set, which matches Hue's usual pattern: Bluetooth-only works in the Hue app, but for Home Assistant you want the Bridge so it joins as a local Zigbee light. Amazon UK's buy box is Amazon Resale, so don't treat the shown price as new stock pricing.

What can Home Assistant control on the Philips Hue Devote S Ceiling Light?

Via the Bridge it shows up in the hue integration as a full-colour light with the usual Hue scenes. Amazon's listing says it is Matter compatible, but I did not verify what Matter exposes on this model, so use the Bridge route if you want reliable local control.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Philips Hue Devote S Ceiling Light work with Home Assistant locally?
Yes. The Philips Hue Devote S Ceiling Light is controlled locally in Home Assistant through a built-in Home Assistant core integration (hue), so it keeps working if your internet connection or the Philips Hue cloud goes down. Control and state updates stay on your own network.
Which protocol does the Philips Hue Devote S Ceiling Light use, and do I need a hub?
The Philips Hue Devote S Ceiling Light uses Zigbee and Bluetooth and Matter. To pair it with Home Assistant you need a Zigbee coordinator (for example a SkyConnect/ZBT-1 or Sonoff dongle) attached to your Home Assistant host; or a Bluetooth adapter on your Home Assistant host or an ESPHome Bluetooth proxy; or a Thread border router if it is Matter-over-Thread, or just your Wi-Fi network if it is Matter-over-Wi-Fi. Philips Hue's own hub is not required when you integrate through a built-in Home Assistant core integration (hue).
