The premium pick for UK festive and feature lighting: 250 individually mappable LEDs spaced 8 cm apart over a 20 m run, IP44-rated for a roofline or an outdoor tree wrap, plus a native Home Assistant integration that's local over Wi-Fi with auto-discovery and effect control. Generic RGB fairy lights are cheaper but only do whole-string colour changes — Twinkly's per-LED addressing runs chase, sparkle and gradient effects, not just "on, one colour". Best for a real tree wrap or roofline; for an indoor feature wall the shorter Twinkly Line fits better. Buy off-season — Amazon UK pricing swings hard around Christmas.

If no effect has ever been saved to the string via the Twinkly app — common straight out of the box, or after a firmware update wipes saved effects — the light entity adds to HA but stays disabled/unavailable until you save at least one effect in-app and reload the integration. The separate mode-select entity is the useful bit for automations: switch between a saved ambient effect for evenings and a plain solid colour for functional alerts (e.g. flashing red on a security trigger), a distinction most single-colour HA lights can't offer.
