The new Amazon Echo Dot, announced on 28 October 2026, is a smart speaker with a built-in Zigbee, Thread and Matter hub. It costs $99 in the US and is reportedly £94.99 in the UK, though Amazon has not confirmed a UK on-sale date. For Home Assistant users, the hub is mainly useful to Alexa, not to you.

What has changed in the Echo range?

Amazon refreshed its Echo range on 28 October 2026, and the headline change is the Echo Dot. Engadget's roundup lists the new Dot at $99, with an AZ3 chip, four beamforming microphones and support for Zigbee, Thread and Matter, so it doubles as a smart home hub. It can also act as a Wi-Fi extender, but only on an eero network.

The same event brought four other products, summarised below. Only the Dot is described as a hub in the coverage we found; the Studio and Show are pitched as Alexa+ displays and speakers with cameras.

Why does the Echo Dot hub matter for Home Assistant users?

For most Home Assistant users it changes little, because Home Assistant already talks to Zigbee and Thread devices through its own radios. A hub inside an Echo pairs devices to Alexa, and Amazon has not announced any local API that lets Home Assistant use that radio as a coordinator. Treat it as a second ecosystem, not a replacement for a dedicated hub or Zigbee stick.

Matter is the useful overlap. A Matter device can be shared with several controllers at once, so a sensor added through Alexa can also be added to Home Assistant, as covered in our Matter setup guide. Check each device's multi-admin limits before relying on it.

If you also use Alexa voice control, the existing route stays the same: expose your entities through Home Assistant, as in our Alexa integration guide. Nothing in the announcement changes that.

What do the new Echo devices cost in the UK?

UK pricing comes from Cordbusters, and TechRadar reports the same £239.99 for the Echo Studio with Camera. We could not verify prices on Amazon's own UK pages, so treat them as reported, not confirmed.

The Dot's reported £94.99 is a real step up. Cordbusters says it sat at £54.99 for most of the last four years and rose to £79.99 earlier this year. For comparison, our Echo Dot 5 review covers the model this replaces. No UK release date was given for any of the devices, and the Echo Show 16 and Alexa Photo Frame were reported as US-only for now.

Should you wait for the new Echo Dot or buy now?

If you only want an Alexa speaker, wait for confirmed UK pricing and a release date before paying a premium. If you want a Zigbee or Matter hub for Home Assistant, don't buy this expecting it to replace a coordinator. A Matter device and a Home Assistant-controlled radio remain the safer setup.

What we don't know yet: whether Home Assistant can discover the Dot as a Thread border router, how many Zigbee devices it supports, and whether Alexa+ features land in the UK at launch. We will update this article when Amazon publishes UK specifications.

Frequently asked questions

Does the new Echo Dot work as a Zigbee hub for Home Assistant?
Not as far as Amazon has said. The new Echo Dot includes a Zigbee, Thread and Matter hub, but coverage describes it as a hub for Alexa, and Amazon has not announced any local interface that lets Home Assistant use that radio as a coordinator. Zigbee devices paired to the Dot belong to Alexa, while Home Assistant normally controls Zigbee through its own USB coordinator and ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT. If you want Home Assistant to own your Zigbee network, a dedicated coordinator is still the reliable route. The caveat is that Matter devices can be shared between controllers, so a Matter-capable device could be paired to both Alexa and Home Assistant. Check the device manufacturer multi-admin guidance first, and wait for the UK specifications from Amazon before assuming anything more.
How much is the new Echo Dot in the UK?
The new Echo Dot is reported at £94.99 in the UK, compared with $99 in the US. That figure comes from the UK retail site Cordbusters, which also says the Dot cost £54.99 for most of the last four years before rising to £79.99 earlier this year. We could not confirm the price on the Amazon UK store, and no UK release date has been announced, so treat £94.99 as a reported price rather than an official one. The Echo Time is reported at £184.99 and the Echo Studio with Camera at £239.99. If you are buying mainly for the smart home hub features, wait for Amazon to confirm UK pricing and availability, because early prices and promotions often change shortly after launch.
Which of the new Echo devices are coming to the UK?
Based on the coverage we found, the new Echo Dot, Echo Time and Echo Studio with Camera are heading to the UK, with reported prices of £94.99, £184.99 and £239.99 respectively. Cordbusters says the Echo Show 16 and Alexa Photo Frame are not part of the UK line-up, although US pre-orders for the Echo Show 16 are open at $500 for delivery before the end of 2026. None of the UK devices has a confirmed on-sale date yet. Amazon also announced kids editions of the Echo Dot and Echo Time. This picture may change once Amazon publishes its UK press release, so check Amazon UK for the current position before planning a purchase.

›How we researched this

Claims in this article are checked against primary sources — manufacturer specifications, official documentation, Which? research, Ofgem guidance, or gov.uk — rather than forum threads or video reviews. Where the author has direct hands-on experience with a product (most Home Assistant, Zigbee, and home-networking gear is running in his own homelab), that is stated explicitly in the text.

For categories outside that personal setup — such as boilers, heat pumps, and other areas that are traditionally a heating engineer's domain — verdicts are built from cross-referenced manufacturer data, published lab results, and vetted expert and owner reviews rather than a claim of personal hands-on testing. See the editorial policy for the full methodology.
