Our verdict

IKEA's current smart home hub, £70 at IKEA UK. IKEA's support page says it handles Zigbee, Thread and Wi-Fi products itself, and Home Assistant has no dedicated integration for it: you reach the devices through the hub's Matter bridge or the HomeKit route. That works, but you only see what the bridge chooses to expose. Do not treat it as a way to avoid a Zigbee stick; it is not set up as a coordinator for Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA in any source we read. UK reviews on IKEA's own page are mixed (3.6/5 from 775 reviews), including a reviewer whose hub firmware had no Thread at the time of writing. Buy it if you want to keep IKEA's app in the loop.

What can Home Assistant control on the IKEA DIRIGERA Hub?

ControlTypeWhat it does
LightsLightIKEA bulbs and drivers bridged over Matter, with on/off, brightness and colour as the bridge allows.
PlugsSwitchSmart plugs/outlets exposed through the Matter bridge.
BlindsCoverConnected blinds bridged over Matter.
Air quality sensors and purifiersSensor / FanListed by Home Assistant as supported device types via the Matter bridge.

No IKEA-specific integration exists in Home Assistant Core for DIRIGERA (the TRADFRI integration page says so explicitly). You add the hub through the Matter integration (Matter bridge) or HomeKit device, which exposes lights, plugs, blinds, remotes, motion and open/close sensors, air purifiers and air quality sensors as of hub firmware 2.615.8. The TRADFRI page also warns that IKEA's older shortcut buttons, remotes and motion sensors only report battery state to Home Assistant, not events, so automating from them means pairing them to ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT directly instead. The IKEA app groups are not imported; use Home Assistant light groups. Note that a Matter-bridged device is only as complete as IKEA's bridge makes it.

Frequently asked questions

Does the IKEA DIRIGERA Hub work with Home Assistant locally?
Yes. The IKEA DIRIGERA Hub is controlled locally in Home Assistant through a built-in Home Assistant core integration (matter), so it keeps working if your internet connection or the IKEA cloud goes down. Control and state updates stay on your own network.
Which protocol does the IKEA DIRIGERA Hub use, and do I need a hub?
The IKEA DIRIGERA Hub uses Matter and Thread and Zigbee. To pair it with Home Assistant you need a Thread border router if it is Matter-over-Thread, or just your Wi-Fi network if it is Matter-over-Wi-Fi; or a Thread border router (Home Assistant Connect ZBT-1, Apple TV 4K or a HomePod mini all work); or a Zigbee coordinator (for example a SkyConnect/ZBT-1 or Sonoff dongle) attached to your Home Assistant host. IKEA's own hub is not required when you integrate through a built-in Home Assistant core integration (matter).
