Our verdict
A motorised arm that clamps over your existing lever or butterfly stopcock, so there is no plumbing work and no cutting into pipework: the least invasive way to get an automated water shutoff. It runs on 4 AA batteries, covers DN15, DN20 and DN25 pipes and pairs with an Aqara water-leak sensor to shut the water on a leak. It is Zigbee, so it works with Zigbee2MQTT and ZHA without an Aqara hub, though you lose Aqara's own app features. It only turns one way, so it has to be fitted the right way round, and a clamp-on motor is only as good as your old stopcock: a seized valve will stall it. Don't treat it as a substitute for fixing a leak.
What can Home Assistant control on the Aqara Valve Controller T1?
| Control | Type | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Valve | Switch | Open or close the valve from HA; Zigbee2MQTT supports ON, OFF and TOGGLE. |
| Battery | Sensor | Battery level (4 x AA); read-only. |
Zigbee2MQTT lists it as VC-X01D (Zigbee model lumi.valve.agl001) exposing an on/off valve switch and battery level; one hands-on review reports it also works in ZHA with no custom quirks. Aqara's own listing says Matter is only offered through an Aqara Zigbee hub acting as a bridge, so for HA use pair it to your own coordinator instead. Test the open and close cycle after fitting and after each battery change, and make sure your leak-shutoff automation does not depend on cloud services.

Frequently asked questions
- Does the Aqara Valve Controller T1 work with Home Assistant locally?
- Yes. The Aqara Valve Controller T1 is controlled locally in Home Assistant through Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA, so it keeps working if your internet connection or the Aqara cloud goes down. Control and state updates stay on your own network.
- Which protocol does the Aqara Valve Controller T1 use, and do I need a hub?
- The Aqara Valve Controller T1 uses Zigbee. To pair it with Home Assistant you need a Zigbee coordinator (for example a SkyConnect/ZBT-1 or Sonoff dongle) attached to your Home Assistant host. Aqara's own hub is not required when you integrate through Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA.
