The garden equivalent of a smart wall switch: a six-valve irrigation controller that talks Bluetooth directly to a phone (or Home Assistant, via a Bluetooth proxy if the controller's outdoors and out of range of your HA host) without needing Gardena's optional Smart Gateway hub at all. That's the appeal over Gardena's cloud-tied 'smart system' line — schedule watering per valve locally, and it keeps working even if Gardena's app backend has a bad day. Range is the catch: Bluetooth-only means you'll likely need one or more ESPHome Bluetooth proxies between the shed and the house for reliable HA control.

A £15-ish Zigbee probe that's cheap enough to put on every houseplant you'd actually be upset to lose. It pairs straight into ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT with no hub of its own required beyond a Zigbee coordinator you likely already have, and it exposes moisture and temperature as two separate entities — which is what makes it useful for automations rather than just an app widget. We used it to drive a three-times-daily watering reminder over Alexa and phone push; full build in the review.

A Zigbee valve/pump that turns a plant monitor's readings into actual watering instead of a nag notification. We paired it with the Smart Soil Moisture Sensor Gen2 and built a moisture-tiered automation — the drier the soil, the longer the valve runs — with an explicit Home Assistant shutoff on top of the device's own timer, because a stuck-open valve is a real flooding risk you shouldn't trust to firmware alone. One gotcha worth flagging up front: it has its own onboard watering schedule that will fight a Home Assistant automation unless you set it to 0.
