Our verdict

A dual-SIM 5G router running OpenWrt-based firmware, with Wi-Fi 6, multi-WAN failover and WireGuard/OpenVPN. It is for people who want control and failover (Home Assistant on a rural line, or a caravan), and it is expensive, with 5G coverage and a SIM plan still to pay for. Overkill for ordinary home use.

What can Home Assistant control on the GL.iNet Spitz AX (GL-X3000)?

No core Home Assistant integration. The community HACS project ha-glinet-router polls GL.iNet routers' local RPC endpoint for device tracking and is documented for several GL.iNet models; I did not verify the GL-X3000 or the current firmware, so local control is not claimed.

Frequently asked questions

Does the GL.iNet Spitz AX (GL-X3000) work with Home Assistant locally?
Partly. The GL.iNet Spitz AX (GL-X3000) connects to Home Assistant through a community integration installed through HACS (glinet), which relies on the GL.iNet cloud. It works in Home Assistant, but commands go via the internet and stop working during an outage of your connection or the GL.iNet service.
Which protocol does the GL.iNet Spitz AX (GL-X3000) use, and do I need a hub?
The GL.iNet Spitz AX (GL-X3000) uses Wi-Fi. To pair it with Home Assistant you need no hub — it joins your Wi-Fi network directly. GL.iNet's own hub is not required when you integrate through a community integration installed through HACS (glinet).
