Our verdict
A cheap plug-in AC1200 extender with OneMesh support. Cheap fixes weak spots, but an extender halves throughput on the repeated band and does nothing for 2.4GHz smart devices that are failing to connect. If you can run a cable, use an access point instead.
What can Home Assistant control on the TP-Link RE300?
No Home Assistant integration. It is a repeater with no admin API; HA only sees the devices connected through it.

Frequently asked questions
- Does the TP-Link RE300 work with Home Assistant locally?
- Partly. The TP-Link RE300 connects to Home Assistant through a certified "Works with Home Assistant" integration, which relies on the TP-Link cloud. It works in Home Assistant, but commands go via the internet and stop working during an outage of your connection or the TP-Link service.
- Which protocol does the TP-Link RE300 use, and do I need a hub?
- The TP-Link RE300 uses Wi-Fi. To pair it with Home Assistant you need no hub — it joins your Wi-Fi network directly. TP-Link's own hub is not required when you integrate through a certified "Works with Home Assistant" integration.
