Our verdict

The weather station with no moving parts: ultrasonic wind and an acoustic rain sensor, solar-powered, in one pole-mounted unit. It is also one of the few stations where HA gets local data: the hub broadcasts readings on your LAN over UDP and Home Assistant listens, with a cloud integration as an alternative. £349 is steep next to an Ecowitt, so buy it for the low-maintenance, no-moving-parts design and the UDP local feed rather than for value.

What can Home Assistant control on the WeatherFlow Tempest?

ControlTypeWhat it does
Wind speed / gust / directionSensorsultrasonic wind
RainSensorsacoustic rain rate and accumulation
LightningSensorsstrike count and distance

Use the WeatherFlow integration (local UDP) for wind, rain, pressure, UV, light and lightning sensors; Home Assistant must be on the same network segment as the hub for broadcasts to arrive. Rain and lightning events are accumulated in short bursts, so templates for 'rained in the last hour' are better than reacting to single readings.

Frequently asked questions

Does the WeatherFlow Tempest work with Home Assistant locally?
Yes. The WeatherFlow Tempest is controlled locally in Home Assistant through a built-in Home Assistant core integration (WeatherFlow), so it keeps working if your internet connection or the WeatherFlow cloud goes down. Control and state updates stay on your own network.
Which protocol does the WeatherFlow Tempest use, and do I need a hub?
The WeatherFlow Tempest uses Wi-Fi. To pair it with Home Assistant you need no hub — it joins your Wi-Fi network directly. WeatherFlow's own hub is not required when you integrate through a built-in Home Assistant core integration (WeatherFlow).
