Our verdict
The all-in-one UniFi box: gateway, four-port gigabit switch and a WiFi 5 access point, with the UniFi Network controller running on the unit itself. It earns its place in a Home Assistant house for VLANs to isolate IoT kit and device tracking, not for raw WiFi speed. At £239 it costs more than a mesh kit, and the radio is dated, so most people add a separate UniFi access point later. If all you want is better coverage, a mesh system is simpler.
What can Home Assistant control on the Ubiquiti UniFi Dream Machine?
| Control | Type | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Client device tracker | Device tracker | Home/away presence for devices connected to the network |
| Bandwidth sensors | Sensor (read-only) | Upload and download rates for clients and WAN |
| Client block | Switch | Block or allow a specific client from the network |
Uses Home Assistant's built-in UniFi integration, which connects locally to the UniFi Network application on the console. Create a local admin account (not a Ubiquiti SSO cloud account) for it. You get device trackers for connected clients, bandwidth and uptime sensors, and optional per-port PoE and client block switches on any attached UniFi switches. Use a stable UniFi Network release; Early Access builds are not supported.

Frequently asked questions
- Does the Ubiquiti UniFi Dream Machine work with Home Assistant locally?
- Yes. The Ubiquiti UniFi Dream Machine is controlled locally in Home Assistant through a built-in Home Assistant core integration (unifi), so it keeps working if your internet connection or the Ubiquiti cloud goes down. Control and state updates stay on your own network.
- Which protocol does the Ubiquiti UniFi Dream Machine use, and do I need a hub?
- The Ubiquiti UniFi Dream Machine uses Wi-Fi. To pair it with Home Assistant you need no hub — it joins your Wi-Fi network directly. Ubiquiti's own hub is not required when you integrate through a built-in Home Assistant core integration (unifi).
