Our verdict
The only self-cleaning litter box in this category with an integration built into Home Assistant Core, which is the whole reason to pay its premium. Setup is a Whisker account plus the Wi-Fi box linked in the Whisker app, then Settings → Devices & Services — no HACS, no tokens, no second account. The trade-off is that everything runs through Whisker's cloud: if their service or your internet is down, the entities go unavailable even though the box keeps cleaning on its own. Hardware-wise it is a laser- and weight-sensor-driven globe rated for cats of 1.36–11.33 kg, with a sealed waste drawer Whisker says may need emptying as rarely as every 8 days depending on your cats.
What can Home Assistant control on the Litter-Robot 4?
| Control | Type | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Litter box | Vacuum | Start a clean cycle and read the unit's state through the main vacuum-type entity. |
| Waste drawer | Sensor | Drawer fill level, the basis for a 'time to empty the box' notification. |
| Litter level | Sensor | Remaining litter in the globe (Litter-Robot 4 and newer). |
| Pet weight | Sensor | Weight of the last visitor, useful for tracking a cat's weight trend when pet profiles are set up in the Whisker app. |
| Clean cycle wait time | Select | How long the box waits after a visit before starting its cycle. |
| Panel lockout | Switch | Locks the physical control panel, handy for curious kids or cats. |
| Firmware | Update | Shows when new firmware is available. |
Built into Home Assistant Core as the litterrobot integration (cloud push, polled every five minutes for device and pet data). The Litter-Robot 4 exposes a main vacuum-type 'Litter box' entity, a Reset button, a firmware Update entity, and sensors for litter level, pet weight, waste drawer, total cycles, last seen and status code, plus binary sensors for power status, sleep mode and sleeping. Limits worth knowing before you build automations: no sleep-schedule configuration on the Litter-Robot 4 and newer, and renaming devices, filter-replacement resets and cycle-count resets are not supported. If entities show unavailable, check whether the Whisker app can still control the box — the problem is usually Whisker's service or the box's Wi-Fi, not Home Assistant.

Frequently asked questions
- Does the Litter-Robot 4 work with Home Assistant locally?
- Partly. The Litter-Robot 4 connects to Home Assistant through a built-in Home Assistant core integration (litterrobot), which relies on the Litter-Robot cloud. It works in Home Assistant, but commands go via the internet and stop working during an outage of your connection or the Litter-Robot service.
- Which protocol does the Litter-Robot 4 use, and do I need a hub?
- The Litter-Robot 4 uses Wi-Fi. To pair it with Home Assistant you need no hub — it joins your Wi-Fi network directly. Litter-Robot's own hub is not required when you integrate through a built-in Home Assistant core integration (litterrobot).
- How much does the Litter-Robot 4 cost in the UK?
- The lowest price we have listed for the Litter-Robot 4 is £699 at Whisker UK. Prices were last checked in November 2026 and change often, so confirm on the retailer's page before buying.
