Smart Home Assistant

Smart pet devices that work with Home Assistant

Self-cleaning litter boxes and other connected pet devices that can be monitored from Home Assistant. Support varies more here than almost anywhere else: one brand has an integration built into Home Assistant Core, others rely on community integrations installed through HACS, and nearly all of it runs through the manufacturer's cloud. For each device we note which route it uses and what breaks if the cloud or the community project goes away.

A reliable microchip flap with curfews, remote lock and entry/exit notifications, and the best-supported pet device in Home Assistant. Budget for the Hub: Sure Petcare's UK page prices the flap at £140, the Hub at £85 and the pair at £205, and states you cannot link the flap to the app without the Hub. It takes 4 x AA (not included) for up to 6 months, and the tunnel opening is 142 mm wide by 120 mm high, so measure your cat before ordering. The Sure Petcare page showed the flap alone as out of stock on the day it was checked.

The only feeder that physically refuses the wrong animal: the lid opens only for a registered microchip or RFID collar tag, which is what stops one cat eating another's food. The catch is the Hub — Sure Petcare says plainly that without it the feeder cannot be linked to the app, and the Hub is £85 on top of the £155 feeder (£240 as a bundle on Sure Petcare's UK store). Battery life is quoted at 6 months, and the sealed bowl takes 400 ml of wet or dry food.

The only self-cleaning litter box in this category with an integration built into Home Assistant Core, which is the whole reason to pay its premium. Setup is a Whisker account plus the Wi-Fi box linked in the Whisker app, then Settings → Devices & Services — no HACS, no tokens, no second account. The trade-off is that everything runs through Whisker's cloud: if their service or your internet is down, the entities go unavailable even though the box keeps cleaning on its own. Hardware-wise it is a laser- and weight-sensor-driven globe rated for cats of 1.36–11.33 kg, with a sealed waste drawer Whisker says may need emptying as rarely as every 8 days depending on your cats.

An open-top self-cleaning box for cats that refuse a closed dome or are too large for a tight entrance. Home Assistant support is the weakest of the three litter boxes we cover: Neakasa has told community members it has no API and no plans to integrate, so the only route is the unofficial hass-neakasa integration through HACS. Reviewers report weaker odour control and more tracked litter than enclosed boxes, which is the price of the open design. UK prices vary widely by seller and date, so none is stored.

The only flap here with prey detection: it checks whether the cat is carrying prey and holds the door shut for that attempt, letting the cat back in without it. It needs mains power (3 m cable included), is designed for cats up to about 6 kg (the maker says cats around 8 kg usually cope, not guaranteed), and the camera points at your doorstep. OnlyCat's own page shows GBP pricing from £275 to £499 and offers a one-time purchase or a rolling subscription version; the subscription version will not run without an active connection, so choose the one-time version if offline resilience matters.

A large enclosed self-cleaning box at well under the Litter-Robot's price, with no official Home Assistant integration — the community Petkit Smart Devices integration (Jezza34000, installed through HACS) is the route, and its supported-devices wiki lists the PuraMax 2 as supported. It talks to PetKit's cloud over MQTT, so updates are near-instant but nothing is local, and a PetKit server change can break it until the author catches up. The listing gives a 1.5–10 kg cat weight range and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only, which is the step most owners trip over while pairing.

Frequently asked questions

Which self-cleaning litter boxes work with Home Assistant?

The Litter-Robot (3, 4 and 5) has an integration built into Home Assistant Core. PetKit litter boxes such as the Pura Max 2 work through the community Petkit Smart Devices integration, and the Neakasa M1 through the unofficial hass-neakasa integration; both install through HACS.

Do smart litter boxes work locally, without the cloud?

Mostly no. The Litter-Robot integration receives pushed updates from Whisker's cloud and polls every five minutes, and the PetKit and Neakasa integrations also talk to their vendors' clouds. The box keeps cleaning on its own if the internet drops, but its Home Assistant entities go unavailable. A cloud-free route exists for PetKit via the separate LocalKit project, with more setup.

Can I use the manufacturer's app and Home Assistant at the same time?

For the Litter-Robot, yes: Home Assistant uses your Whisker account alongside the app. For PetKit and Neakasa, using one login in both the app and the integration can cause session conflicts that log the app out, so the usual advice is to create a second account, share the device to it, and log the integration in with that.
