Our verdict
A reliable microchip flap with curfews, remote lock and entry/exit notifications, and the best-supported pet device in Home Assistant. Budget for the Hub: Sure Petcare's UK page prices the flap at £140, the Hub at £85 and the pair at £205, and states you cannot link the flap to the app without the Hub. It takes 4 x AA (not included) for up to 6 months, and the tunnel opening is 142 mm wide by 120 mm high, so measure your cat before ordering. The Sure Petcare page showed the flap alone as out of stock on the day it was checked.
What can Home Assistant control on the SureFlap Microchip Cat Flap Connect?
| Control | Type | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Pet presence | Binary sensor | Inside/outside state per registered pet; usable as a trigger or condition. |
| Lock state | Lock | Three entities: locked in, locked out, locked all. |
| Flap battery | Sensor | Battery level for a replacement reminder. |
| Set pet location | Action | Manually override a pet's inside/outside state, e.g. after it uses a different exit. |
Built-in 'Sure Petcare' integration, cloud polling via your Sure Petcare account. Each flap gets a connectivity sensor, a battery level sensor and three lock entities (Locked in, Locked out, Locked all); each registered pet gets an inside/outside presence binary sensor. Two actions are exposed: surepetcare.set_lock_state and surepetcare.set_pet_location (to correct presence when a cat uses another exit). Home Assistant's docs also ship a 'Pet select location' blueprint (up to 10 flaps) whose sync is one-way: changing the select entity does not update Sure Petcare. Because everything routes through Sure's cloud, there is no offline control: keep a physical fallback for letting the cat in.

Frequently asked questions
- Does the SureFlap Microchip Cat Flap Connect work with Home Assistant locally?
- Partly. The SureFlap Microchip Cat Flap Connect connects to Home Assistant through a built-in Home Assistant core integration, which relies on the SureFlap cloud. It works in Home Assistant, but commands go via the internet and stop working during an outage of your connection or the SureFlap service.
- Which protocol does the SureFlap Microchip Cat Flap Connect use, and do I need a hub?
- The SureFlap Microchip Cat Flap Connect uses Wi-Fi. To pair it with Home Assistant you need no hub — it joins your Wi-Fi network directly. SureFlap's own hub is not required when you integrate through a built-in Home Assistant core integration.
