Our verdict

The only feeder that physically refuses the wrong animal: the lid opens only for a registered microchip or RFID collar tag, which is what stops one cat eating another's food. The catch is the Hub — Sure Petcare says plainly that without it the feeder cannot be linked to the app, and the Hub is £85 on top of the £155 feeder (£240 as a bundle on Sure Petcare's UK store). Battery life is quoted at 6 months, and the sealed bowl takes 400 ml of wet or dry food.

What can Home Assistant control on the SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder Connect?

ControlTypeWhat it does
Feeder connectivityBinary sensorOnline/offline status via the Hub, useful for a 'feeder lost connection' alert.
Feeder batterySensorBattery level for low-battery notifications; the only other feeder entity.

Built-in 'Sure Petcare' integration (Settings → Devices & Services, no HACS). It logs in with your Sure Petcare account and polls the cloud, so the Hub must be online. For a feeder it creates just two entities: a connectivity binary sensor and a battery level sensor. Home Assistant's own docs list no way to trigger a feed and no feeding-history or bowl-weight sensor, so automations are limited to 'feeder offline' and 'battery low' alerts. Pet presence and flap locks come from any SureFlap in the same account, not from the feeder.

Frequently asked questions

Does the SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder Connect work with Home Assistant locally?
Partly. The SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder Connect connects to Home Assistant through a built-in Home Assistant core integration, which relies on the SureFeed cloud. It works in Home Assistant, but commands go via the internet and stop working during an outage of your connection or the SureFeed service.
Which protocol does the SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder Connect use, and do I need a hub?
The SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder Connect uses Wi-Fi. To pair it with Home Assistant you need no hub — it joins your Wi-Fi network directly. SureFeed's own hub is not required when you integrate through a built-in Home Assistant core integration.
How much does the SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder Connect cost in the UK?
