Only worth buying as an add-on to an existing Hive Hub and thermostat setup — not a standalone purchase. At £59 a valve it's more than double the £25.99 SONOFF TRVZB, a Zigbee2MQTT/ZHA-native TRV that runs locally with no cloud dependency. Hive ships M30, M28 and Danfoss RA adapters in the box, covering most UK valve bodies, and runs on 2x AA batteries — Hive doesn't publish an official life figure, but expect roughly a year, better than the SONOFF's ~6 months on three AAs. The catch is everything routes through Hive's cloud rather than local Zigbee, so state and boost commands lag behind a native HA TRV.

This is cloud-polling (30s minimum interval) against Hive's servers, not local Zigbee, so the climate entity's state and boost actions all round-trip through Hive's API. A well-documented flaw carries over from the native Hive app: the valve throttles itself nearly shut as the room approaches target temperature, so if it drops back below target it barely reopens even while actively calling for heat, stretching a normal 5-minute boiler run into 20+. The community fix is an HA automation that watches for the TRV activating, snapshots the current setpoint, forces boost_heating_on for a few minutes to fully open the valve, then restores the setpoint — HA compensating for a hardware/firmware quirk Hive's own app can't. Separately, grouping TRVs into a multi-valve zone in the Hive app can make individual climate entities vanish from HA without a replacement group entity appearing, so do zone grouping before building HA automations around specific entity IDs.
