The kit to buy when your boiler cupboard isn't near where you want the thermostat: only the link between the room unit and the Wireless Receiver X is wireless — the receiver itself still wires into the boiler's relay or OpenTherm terminals, same as the Wired kit's Bridge X. Pick this over Wired if running a cable to your preferred wall position isn't practical, or you're renting and don't want visible wiring; the room unit runs on 3x AAA batteries instead. It's pricier too — £129.99-£159.99 versus the Wired kit's £119.99 — but the receiver doubles as the Thread border router, so no separate Bridge X needed.

Only the room Thermostat X shows up as a Matter node — Home Assistant gets a climate entity limited to heat/off hvac_mode and target temperature, plus a humidity sensor, the same thin cluster mapping seen on the Radiator Thermostat X. The Wireless Receiver X itself carries no Matter code and never appears as a device or entity, so hot-water switching stays cloud-only through the tado app's Boost Hot Water button regardless of whether it's wired via relay or OpenTherm — that wiring choice only changes what the boiler receives, not what HA can see or control. Fabric order matters too: commission the tado app first, because it will only re-accept the original box QR code, not a fresh Matter setup code, so joining HA first usually means a factory reset to recover. Since hot water can't be driven locally, a workable automation is to mirror tado's own arrival trigger onto the Thermostat X's climate entity in HA, so heating ramps up in step with hot water without hot water ever needing to be an HA-native action.
