The Homey Portal is a 2.8-inch round touchscreen controller with a stainless-steel rotary dial, announced by Homey (Athom) at IFA 2026. It costs €249 to pre-order, rises to €299, and controls a single room through an existing Homey system. It does not work with Home Assistant.

What has changed with the Homey Portal and Pro?

Homey unveiled the Portal at IFA in early September 2026. It is a small wall or desk controller: a 2.8-inch round touchscreen wrapped in a stainless-steel ring, supplied with both a desk stand and a wall mount. The ring handles anything you turn up or down, such as light level, volume or temperature, while the screen handles taps, per-room shortcuts and Flows.

Each Portal is assigned to a zone (Living Room, Kitchen and so on) and automatically shows the devices already in that zone. It can pin Flows, Moods and devices to a customisable home screen, show energy data from sources such as the Homey Energy Dongle and Shelly Matter plugs, and offers a Guest Mode that limits which devices visitors can reach. Homey says it works out of the box with Homey Cloud, Homey Pro (2023–2026), Homey Pro mini and the Homey Self-Hosted Server.

Alongside it, Homey launched the Homey Pro (2026). It keeps the 2023 model's radios (Matter, Thread, Zigbee, Z-Wave, Bluetooth LE, 433 MHz, infrared and Wi-Fi) and the same €399 price, but doubles the RAM from 2 GB to 4 GB so it can run well over 100 Homey apps. Homey guarantees updates for both models until at least June 2031.

Does the Homey Portal work with Home Assistant?

No Home Assistant support has been announced. The Portal is built to pair with Homey's own platform, and the launch material lists only Homey Cloud, Homey Pro, Homey Pro mini and the Self-Hosted Server as compatible controllers. It is not a generic Matter display you can point at any hub.

If you run Home Assistant, the closest equivalent is a wall-mounted tablet or a dedicated display running a dashboard. Our Home Assistant dashboard guide covers room-by-room layouts and kiosk setups, and the Home Assistant Green review covers the hub side. Note that the Portal's price is a fair chunk above what a basic tablet and mount cost, so the appeal is the dial and the finish rather than raw value.

Why does this matter for Home Assistant users?

It shows where rival platforms are heading: physical, room-scoped controls rather than phone apps. Homey is pitching the Portal as something anyone in the room can use, which addresses a familiar complaint about smart homes that only the person with the app can operate. Home Assistant owners have been solving the same problem with DIY dashboards for years.

It is also a reminder of the IFA trend towards dedicated displays and dials. Our IFA 2026 smart home roundup covers the wider show, and the best smart home hubs for the UK guide compares Homey with the alternatives.

UK availability and price

Homey's pages reference UK localisation and the Homey Pro (2026) is listed for the UK with GBP pricing, but a sterling price for the Portal has not been confirmed in the sources we checked. Euro pricing is €249 for the first production batch and €299 afterwards. Expect UK prices to differ once VAT and shipping are shown at checkout.

Should you wait for the Portal?

Only if you already use Homey. Orders ship from around December, so anyone wanting a wall controller this winter is better served by a tablet running Home Assistant. If you are undecided between platforms, do not choose Homey on the strength of one accessory.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Homey Portal?
The Homey Portal is a small room controller from Homey (Athom), launched at IFA 2026. It pairs a 2.8-inch round touchscreen with a stainless-steel rotary ring, and comes with a desk stand and a wall mount. Each unit is assigned to one zone, such as the living room, and shows the lights, music, thermostats and Flows already set up there. The ring adjusts light level, volume and temperature, so anyone in the room can use it without opening a phone app. It costs €249 to pre-order and €299 afterwards, with shipping expected before the end of 2026. The main caveat is that it needs an existing Homey setup: Homey Cloud, Homey Pro, Homey Pro mini or the Self-Hosted Server. It is not a standalone hub, and it is not designed to work with other platforms.
Does the Homey Portal work with Home Assistant?
No. Homey has not announced Home Assistant support for the Portal, and its launch material lists only Homey Cloud, Homey Pro (2023 to 2026), Homey Pro mini and the Homey Self-Hosted Server as compatible controllers. That means a Home Assistant user cannot simply buy one and connect it to their existing setup. If you want a dedicated wall control for Home Assistant, the usual route is a small tablet or display running a Lovelace dashboard in kiosk mode, which our dashboard guide covers. The trade-off is design: a purpose-built dial and stainless-steel ring feels different from a tablet in a frame. Treat any claim of third-party compatibility as unconfirmed until Homey or the Home Assistant project says so in writing.
How much does the Homey Portal cost in the UK?
Homey has confirmed euro pricing only for the Portal: €249 as an introductory price for the first production batch, rising to a regular €299. A sterling price was not confirmed in the sources we checked, although Homey's pages reference UK localisation and the Homey Pro (2026) is listed for UK customers with GBP pricing. Converting the euro price gives a rough guide, but exchange rates, VAT and shipping can change the final figure, so wait for the UK checkout price before budgeting. Orders are expected to ship before the end of 2026, with the first units due around December. You also need a compatible Homey system, so add the cost of a Homey Pro (€399) or a Homey Cloud subscription if you do not already have one.

›How we researched this

Claims in this article are checked against primary sources — manufacturer specifications, official documentation, Which? research, Ofgem guidance, or gov.uk — rather than forum threads or video reviews. Where the author has direct hands-on experience with a product (most Home Assistant, Zigbee, and home-networking gear is running in his own homelab), that is stated explicitly in the text.

For categories outside that personal setup — such as boilers, heat pumps, and other areas that are traditionally a heating engineer's domain — verdicts are built from cross-referenced manufacturer data, published lab results, and vetted expert and owner reviews rather than a claim of personal hands-on testing. See the editorial policy for the full methodology.
