A well-built, self-learning thermostat with OpenTherm support on compatible boilers and no subscription, but it is the last Learning Thermostat Google is selling in the UK, and Home Assistant only reaches it through Google's cloud. Setup involves a one-off US$5 Device Access fee and a Google Cloud project, which is a lot of faff compared with tado or Hive. Worth it if you already own one or want the Nest hardware; if Home Assistant is the priority, a Matter or local-API thermostat is the less painful route.
What can Home Assistant control on the Google Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd gen)?
| Control | Type | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Climate | Climate | Heat/off mode, target temperature and eco preset for the thermostat |
| Temperature | Sensor (read-only) | Current room temperature from the thermostat |
| Humidity | Sensor (read-only) | Current room humidity reading |
Uses the core Nest integration, which talks to Google's Smart Device Management API and receives updates through Google Cloud Pub/Sub, so there is no local control and it stops working if Google's service or your internet is down. Setup needs a US$5 non-refundable Device Access project, a Google Cloud project with OAuth credentials, and a consumer Google account (Workspace accounts are not supported). Each thermostat appears as a climate entity plus temperature and humidity sensors. Temperature readings come only from the thermostat set as the active sensor in the Nest app, not from separate Nest temperature sensors.

Frequently asked questions
- Does the Google Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd gen) work with Home Assistant locally?
- Partly. The Google Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd gen) connects to Home Assistant through the manufacturer's cloud integration (nest), which relies on the Google cloud. - Which protocol does the Google Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd gen) use, and do I need a hub?
- The Google Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd gen) uses Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. To pair it with Home Assistant you need no hub — it joins your Wi-Fi network directly; or a Bluetooth adapter on your Home Assistant host or an ESPHome Bluetooth proxy. Google's own hub is not required when you integrate through the manufacturer's cloud integration (nest).
