The cheapest route into smart heating, and it shows up fine in HA via the built-in Hive integration — though that integration is cloud-polling, so expect slight lag and a dependency on Hive's servers. The £79 kit is the wall-mounted thermostat plus a receiver that wires into your boiler's existing controls; that wiring is why Hive defaults to professional install at checkout, and DIY is only realistic if you're already comfortable inside a boiler's low-voltage terminals. Versus the full-size Hive Thermostat, you lose the physical display and dial — everything runs through the app — for the same core heating control. Single-zone only; multi-room needs the separate Multizone kit.

The climate entity exposes hvac_mode (heat/off), current and target temperature in 0.5°C steps, plus a Boost preset that runs a fixed 30-minute override at +0.5°C over the current setpoint via a dedicated action rather than a duration field on the entity itself. Setup mandates 2FA on the Hive account using the account owner's own credentials — secondary or shared logins are rejected outright by the config flow. Recurring community and GitHub reports describe token-refresh failures that throttle or fully lock out the Hive cloud API for the whole home network (not just Home Assistant) until the integration is removed and re-added, a pattern going back to 2022 that still surfaces after Hive-side auth changes. A workable automation despite the lag: fire the boost action for a set duration when a person/geofence entity flips to 'home' outside the scheduled heating window, since boost's fixed +0.5°C behaviour is predictable enough to pre-warm a room even though the resulting state update trails by a poll cycle.
