Smart Home Assistant

UPS & power backup that work with Home Assistant

Uninterruptible power supplies that keep a Home Assistant host, router and NAS running through a power cut and report their state back to Home Assistant. They connect through the built-in NUT (Network UPS Tools) integration, which talks to a NUT server rather than to the UPS directly. For each model we note what sensors it reports and what to check before buying.

Cheap, well-known 750 VA tower, but read the small print before buying in late 2026: APC's own product page says the BX750MI is 'to be discontinued on 31 Dec 2026', with the BXR750MI as the recommended replacement. It has four IEC C13 outlets and no UK sockets, so you will need IEC-to-UK leads, and the 410 W rating is modest. Home Assistant sees it only through a NUT server, and the NUT compatibility list flags the BX****MI family as 'may need tweaks since 2023', with at least one forum user reporting no APC driver working on a BX750MI. Plan for some fiddling.

The bigger sibling of the CP900: 1500 VA / 900 W pure sine wave with a HID USB port, and the one with the strongest NUT paper trail, since the CP1500EPFCLCD has its own page on the Network UPS Tools list under usbhid-ups. The same caveat applies though: Home Assistant only reads it via a NUT server on the machine the USB cable plugs into. Runtime is 10 minutes at half load and 3 at full load, so this buys you a clean shutdown, not an evening of backup. NUT users note some values are unreliable, notably output.voltage varying from the LCD.

A 900 VA / 540 W pure-sine-wave UPS with a HID USB port, which is what makes it usable with Home Assistant at all: the plug-in does not talk to the UPS itself, it reads a NUT server on whatever box has the USB cable attached (a Pi, a NAS, the HA host). That is an extra moving part many people underestimate. Runtime is short, CyberPower quotes 7 minutes at half load and 1 minute at full load, so size it as a graceful-shutdown buffer for a router, hub and Pi rather than hours of backup. The battery is a user-replaceable sealed lead-acid pack.

Frequently asked questions

How does Home Assistant monitor a UPS?

Through the built-in NUT integration. It cannot talk to a UPS directly: a Network UPS Tools server must be running somewhere on your network, with the UPS connected to that machine, usually over USB. Home Assistant then polls the NUT server locally, by default every 60 seconds.

What can I see and control?

Typically battery charge, load, input and output voltage and status sensors, plus diagnostic sensors that are mostly disabled by default. Buttons and switches for individual outlets appear only on UPS models with switchable outlets and when a NUT user with the right permissions is configured.
