If you're researching a Vaillant vSMART review before buying one, stop — Vaillant's own UK product pages now list vSMART as discontinued. It isn't sold new any more, and Vaillant has moved its smart heating range onto a different control lineup. What vSMART was
vSMART was Vaillant's weather-compensated smart heating control, sold as an add-on for compatible Vaillant boilers. According to Vaillant's own product page, it offered remote control of heating and hot water from a mobile app, Amazon Alexa voice control, weather compensation (adjusting flow temperature against outdoor conditions rather than just a room setpoint), energy consumption monitoring, a holiday mode with frost protection, and a learning function that adapted to the household's heating patterns over time. Vaillant states the app required iOS 15 or Android 7 as a minimum. That feature set put it in the same bracket as Hive Active Heating and early tado° — a bolt-on smart layer for an existing boiler, rather than a full replacement heating system.
Compatibility — it only ever worked with Vaillant boilers
Vaillant's product page describes vSMART as working with the manufacturer's own boiler range fitted with eBUS communication technology, rather than as a universal thermostat. That's an important distinction if you're comparing it to Hive or tado°, both of which are designed to bolt onto almost any boiler via a wiring hub. vSMART was never that — it was a Vaillant-appliance accessory first, and a smart thermostat second. If your boiler isn't a Vaillant model with eBUS, vSMART was never going to be an option regardless of its discontinued status.
Why it's gone — and what replaced it
Vaillant hasn't published a detailed reason for retiring vSMART, but the shape of its current control range makes the direction clear. The company has consolidated smart control around the myVaillant app and a separate myVAILLANT connect internet gateway, paired with a choice of physical controls: sensoCOMFORT for multi-zone, heat pump and hybrid systems; sensoHOME for simpler single-zone setups; and sensoROOM / sensoROOM pure as basic wireless or digital room thermostats. Vaillant's product pages state that myVAILLANT connect is compatible with all Vaillant eBUS appliances from 2006 onwards, including its heat pump range, and that it also integrates with Apple HomeKit. In other words, vSMART's job — weather compensation, app control, remote monitoring — hasn't disappeared, it's just been split across a gateway-plus-control combination that Vaillant positions as more flexible for heat pumps and hybrid systems, which have grown a lot in the UK market since vSMART first launched. If you already have a vSMART installed
A discontinued product isn't necessarily a dead one. If vSMART is already fitted and working, there's no need to rip it out — discontinuation on Vaillant's site means it's no longer sold new, not that existing units stop functioning. The practical risk is longer-term: spare parts, app updates and support get deprioritised for retired product lines over time. If you're having boiler work done anyway, or the vSMART hub itself fails, ask your installer whether swapping to myVAILLANT connect plus a current sensoHOME or sensoCOMFORT control makes sense as part of that job, rather than sourcing a replacement discontinued unit secondhand.
What to buy instead
For a straight Vaillant-to-Vaillant upgrade, sensoHOME is the closest like-for-like replacement for vSMART's original brief — app control and weather compensation for a single-zone home — while sensoCOMFORT is the step up for houses with multiple heating zones, a heat pump, or a hybrid system. Both need the myVAILLANT connect gateway for full app and remote-access functionality, per Vaillant's own compatibility pages. Verdict
vSMART did a reasonable job for its time — weather compensation, app control and Alexa integration were solid features for a Vaillant-only smart control. But it's discontinued, Vaillant-boiler-exclusive even when it was current, and has been superseded by a more flexible gateway-based system. There's no reason to seek one out new in 2026; if you're starting from scratch, look at sensoHOME or sensoCOMFORT for a Vaillant system, or a boiler-agnostic option like Hive or tado° if you want something that will survive a future boiler swap to a different brand.
