Smart Home Assistant

Away-from-home devices that work with Home Assistant

What matters when you are away is knowing about problems fast and making the house look occupied. Prefer devices that keep working locally: a camera or alert that depends on the cloud is the first thing to fail when it matters.

The cheap way into UniFi Protect: a £75 wire-free 2K camera that runs off its own rechargeable battery and pulls off HA's unifiprotect integration just as well as the £300+ PoE cameras — same local streams, same instant smart-detection events. The real caveat is who this is for: existing UniFi network owners only, since you still need a Dream Machine or Protect console before it records anything. Battery life shrinks fast in busy spots — every motion event wakes it from sleep — and the modest ~6m IR range suits a porch or hallway, not a driveway. Skip it if you're starting from zero.

The power-user's Wi-Fi plug: HA's excellent core shelly integration talks to it locally and push-updates instantly, with proper 13A/3000W rating and precise power metering. At roughly double a Tapo P110 or SONOFF S60ZBTPG, it earns its keep — a local RPC API keeps automations running if the internet drops, and on-device scripting can enforce power limits without HA in the loop. Standby draw is under 1W, so running it 24/7 costs pennies a year. At 60 x 60 x 56mm it's a chunkier cube than the P110, so check it won't block a neighbouring socket. (The smaller Plug S Gen3 is EU-pin only — this is the BS1363 model.)

Still the benchmark UK smart bulb: the native Hue integration is platinum-grade, fully local via the Bridge, and push-based so state changes are instant. Also available in B22 bayonet for older UK fittings, and it pairs directly with Zigbee2MQTT/ZHA if you'd rather skip the Bridge. At around £45 it costs roughly six times IKEA's £7 KAJPLATS colour bulb, and that gap buys real colour accuracy — Hue's Gamut C renders deep reds and blues more convincingly than budget RGB LEDs, plus a matured ecosystem: Entertainment sync for gaming/TV, Hue Labs, and Bridge-side dynamic scenes. Best for feature lighting and colour-critical rooms, not bulbs you'll barely notice.

Unique dual-camera design (face view + parcel view at your feet) with 8GB local storage and no subscription — superb hardware value at around £110. Battery life is strong: eufy rates the removable pack for up to six months per charge, and colour night vision reaches roughly 5m — fine for the porch, not the driveway. The catch is Home Assistant: it relies on the community eufy_security HACS integration, still needs a eufy cloud account, and can break on firmware updates. Reolink's Video Doorbell WiFi holds official Platinum Works with Home Assistant certification with a simpler, fully local path — pick eufy for the dual-camera trick, Reolink if HA reliability matters more.

The default leak sensor for Home Assistant households: IP67-rated, CR2032-powered (roughly two years per battery) and instant wet/dry reporting under sinks, washing machines and combi boilers. At under £20 it undercuts most Zigbee alternatives, and its compact 50 × 50 × 15mm puck sits flush against skirting or squeezes into tight spots like behind a toilet or under a dishwasher — floor placement generally beats mounting, since it triggers on the probe pins touching standing water, not humidity. Pairs directly with Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA (model SJCGQ11LM) so you can skip the Aqara hub entirely.

Shelly Flood Gen4

  • Wi-Fi supported

  • Matter supported
  • BT supported
  • not supported

The most flexible flood sensor Shelly's made — pick Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Bluetooth or Matter at setup, joining whatever mesh you already run, with a 2m cable extendable to 150m for reaching under a tank or behind an appliance. For most UK Home Assistant users we'd pick Wi-Fi: it's the only mode that gets full local RPC integration via mDNS auto-discovery, no cloud, no extra Zigbee coordinator. Tuck the sensor body out of sight and run the cable to the risk point — under the sink trap, behind the washing machine hose, or along a boiler's pressure-relief pipe. Commit to one radio at pairing; you can't run several at once.

Aqara Valve Controller T1
Zigbee2MQTT / ZHALocal control
  • Zigbee supported
  • Z-Wave not supported
  • Wi-Fi not supported
  • Thread not supported
  • Matter not supported
  • BT not supported
  • not supported

A motorised arm that clamps over your existing lever or butterfly stopcock, so there is no plumbing work and no cutting into pipework: the least invasive way to get an automated water shutoff. It runs on 4 AA batteries, covers DN15, DN20 and DN25 pipes and pairs with an Aqara water-leak sensor to shut the water on a leak. It is Zigbee, so it works with Zigbee2MQTT and ZHA without an Aqara hub, though you lose Aqara's own app features. It only turns one way, so it has to be fitted the right way round, and a clamp-on motor is only as good as your old stopcock: a seized valve will stall it. Don't treat it as a substitute for fixing a leak.

Bosch Smart Home Smoke Detector II
Native integrationLocal control
  • Zigbee supported
  • Z-Wave not supported
  • Wi-Fi not supported
  • Thread not supported
  • Matter not supported
  • BT not supported
  • not supported

The one smoke alarm in this group with a real, local Home Assistant route: the core Bosch Smart Home integration talks to the Smart Home Controller over your LAN (local push) and exposes the alarm state, plus an intrusion-alarm switch on the II. It is Zigbee, runs on a replaceable lithium cell (roughly 5 years per retailers, 85dB), and the alarms sound together. The catch is the Bosch controller: you pay for it and you are buying into Bosch's ecosystem, and the detector does not pair with a generic Zigbee dongle. HA can read it and sound or clear the intrusion alarm, but it must never be your only fire warning.

3.5 (12 reviews)

  • Zigbee not supported

  • Wi-Fi supported

  • Matter supported
  • BT supported

At £122.75 the L2 costs roughly 16% more than the Aqara U200 Lite, and most of that premium buys polish rather than extra hardware — neither lock ships with a keypad or fingerprint reader. Yale's Smart Keypad (~£55) or fingerprint-capable Smart Keypad 2 (~£105+) are separate purchases, same as Aqara's approach. The bigger practical difference is backup access: the L2 has no physical key path by default, so budget for the optional Thumbturn Adapter or a compatible key-and-axle cylinder if you want one. It runs on a rechargeable Yale battery pack (~6 months per charge) rather than swappable AAs, and needs an emergency-function euro cylinder, same requirement as the Aqara.

3.2 (139 reviews)

  • Z-Wave not supported
  • Wi-Fi not supported
  • Thread supported
  • Matter supported
  • BT not supported

Aqara's 2025 TRV launched specifically for the UK market, and unlike the older E1 it does Thread: flip it to Thread mode and it joins Home Assistant over Matter with no Aqara hub at all. At £49.99 it undercuts the tado X radiator valve while matching the no-hub trick — but that convenience costs you valve position, battery reporting and external-sensor pairing in Home Assistant. Want those back? Add an Aqara hub and run it Zigbee instead. It's a compact ⌀57×90mm cylinder fitting standard M30×1.5 valves (six adapters included), and reviewers confirm the under-30dB motor claim — quieter than most rival TRVs, tado's included, so it won't disturb sleep.

SONOFF TRVZB Zigbee Thermostatic Radiator Valve
Zigbee2MQTT / ZHALocal control
  • Zigbee supported
  • Z-Wave not supported
  • Wi-Fi not supported
  • Thread not supported
  • Matter not supported
  • BT not supported
  • not supported

The budget king for Home Assistant TRVs: around £22 a radiator versus £60+ for the Bosch Radiator Thermostat II, with equally solid Zigbee2MQTT/ZHA support and no hub or cloud dependency. The trade-off is build quality and running costs — three AA batteries typically last only around six months (versus roughly two years on the Bosch), and the plastic body and motor feel noticeably cheaper. Fits M30x1.5mm valves directly, with adapters in the box for Danfoss RA/RAV/RAVL, Caleffi, Giacomini and M28. Best suited to whole-house rollouts on a budget rather than the one or two rooms where you want set-and-forget accuracy.

How to read the labels

Native integration means Home Assistant ships the integration itself. Works with HA means the maker certifies it. HACS component and Zigbee2MQTT / ZHA are community routes you set up yourself, and they can break when the maker changes something. Cloud integrationmeans the device only works through the maker's service.

Local controlmeans Home Assistant controls the device on your own network, so it keeps working if your internet or the maker's service goes down.
