Smart Home Assistant

Smart home devices for renters that need no wiring

Everything here plugs in, screws into an existing bulb socket, sticks on or clips onto what is already there. None of it needs mains wiring. Tenancies differ, so check yours before fitting anything to a door, and take adhesive mounts off carefully when you move out.

The power-user's Wi-Fi plug: HA's excellent core shelly integration talks to it locally and push-updates instantly, with proper 13A/3000W rating and precise power metering. At roughly double a Tapo P110 or SONOFF S60ZBTPG, it earns its keep — a local RPC API keeps automations running if the internet drops, and on-device scripting can enforce power limits without HA in the loop. Standby draw is under 1W, so running it 24/7 costs pennies a year. At 60 x 60 x 56mm it's a chunkier cube than the P110, so check it won't block a neighbouring socket. (The smaller Plug S Gen3 is EU-pin only — this is the BS1363 model.)

A tidy, well-built Zigbee plug that pairs into a Philips Hue bridge as well as Zigbee2MQTT/ZHA — a real point of difference from the SONOFF S60ZBTPG and Aqara Power Plug H2 UK RGB on this list, neither of which offer that Hue-bridge route into HA. At £19.99 it sits between the SONOFF (£13.99, cheapest energy-monitoring Zigbee plug here, but hub-free Z2M/ZHA only, no Hue) and the pricier Aqara H2 UK RGB (£32.99, Matter/Thread native but no power or energy data over Matter at all). Best fit: a household already running a Hue bridge for lighting that wants one more plug reporting proper wattage into HA without adding a second ecosystem. If you're not on Hue, the cheaper SONOFF is the better buy.

IKEA's 2026 replacement for the Tretakt and Inspelning, and at £7 with full energy monitoring (power, voltage and amps) it still undercuts SONOFF's S60ZBTPG (£13.99) and TP-Link's Tapo P110 (£12.99) by roughly half. The trade-off is protocol lock-in: it's Matter-over-Thread only, so you need a Thread border router — a Home Assistant Connect ZBT-1, Apple TV or DIRIGERA — already running before it does anything, unlike the Zigbee S60ZBTPG or standalone Wi-Fi P110. IKEA doesn't publish a standby draw figure, so treat idle-power claims with caution until someone measures a unit. Best value pick if you already have Thread infrastructure; otherwise the P110 is the easier standalone buy.

Still the benchmark UK smart bulb: the native Hue integration is platinum-grade, fully local via the Bridge, and push-based so state changes are instant. Also available in B22 bayonet for older UK fittings, and it pairs directly with Zigbee2MQTT/ZHA if you'd rather skip the Bridge. At around £45 it costs roughly six times IKEA's £7 KAJPLATS colour bulb, and that gap buys real colour accuracy — Hue's Gamut C renders deep reds and blues more convincingly than budget RGB LEDs, plus a matured ecosystem: Entertainment sync for gaming/TV, Hue Labs, and Bridge-side dynamic scenes. Best for feature lighting and colour-critical rooms, not bulbs you'll barely notice.

At £7 this tunable-white Matter-over-Thread bulb undercuts everything comparable in the UK — Philips Hue's equivalent White Ambiance E27 runs £30+ for the same 806-lumen output, and the KAJPLATS matches it on CRI (90) while beating it on rated lifespan (25,000 hours). The catch: it needs an existing Thread border router — DIRIGERA, Apple TV, or a Hue Bridge — before it's controllable, so it's not a good first smart bulb for anyone starting from zero. For a household with Thread already running, it's the cheapest way to bulk-fit hallways and reading lamps where colour isn't needed.

At 1100 lm and CRI ≥90, this matches Hue's flagship E27 for brightness and actually beats it on colour rendering (Hue is CRI ≥80) — but it isn't the bargain option. Single bulbs are £19.99; the 3-pack works out at £16.66 each (£49.99), still pricier than IKEA's £9 KAJPLATS colour bulb for barely more brightness (1055 lm) and identical CRI. Hue's £44.99 buys a deeper Gamut C colour range and a far more mature ecosystem. Nanoleaf earns its middle-ground price mainly through native Matter-over-Thread support with no bridge or subscription — buy the 3-pack if you're kitting out more than one fitting, since the per-bulb saving is real.

Zigbee2MQTT / ZHALocal control

  • Wi-Fi not supported
  • Thread not supported

The cheapest way to put a physical button on a Home Assistant automation: a coin-cell Zigbee button you stick to a wall, a bedside table or a sofa arm. Single, double and hold presses give you three actions per button, and it pairs straight into Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA with no Aqara hub needed. The catch is the old Aqara quirk: it can be fussy about pairing through non-Aqara router devices, so pair it close to the coordinator first. It is a remote, not a wired switch, so it won't stop anyone cutting power at the wall.

Four quid for a Matter-over-Thread remote with a scroll wheel that can manage three groups of lights. That price makes it hard to ignore, and it works with HA's Matter integration without an IKEA hub. The cost is polish: IKEA's own reviews are poor (2.6 out of 5 across nearly 400 UK reviews), batteries are not included, and what Home Assistant exposes of the scroll wheel is thinner than the IKEA app suggests. Buy one to try, not a dozen untested.

The best-feeling remote in the Hue range: four tap buttons for scenes plus a rotary dial that dims smoothly, and it runs on a battery with no wiring. Through the Hue Bridge it reaches Home Assistant as button and rotary events, which makes it a lovely physical control for non-Hue things too (volume, blinds, thermostat setpoint). It is Hue-first: you pay a Bridge-based ecosystem premium and the dial events need a little blueprint work in HA. Around £36 at Amazon is fair.

A battery-powered four-button remote that sticks to a wall or sits in a back plate, and the cheapest way to give every Hue light a physical switch. It also sends button events to Home Assistant through the Bridge, which makes it a handy trigger for non-Hue automations. It is not a wired switch, so it does not fix the classic problem of someone flicking the wall switch and cutting power to the bulbs.

One of the few contact sensors officially certified Works with Home Assistant (Matter over Thread), so pairing and long-term support are as safe as it gets. At £24 it still costs roughly double Aqara's own Zigbee door sensor and over three times IKEA's £7 MYGGBETT, which runs the same Matter-over-Thread stack — pick the P2 for the certification and slimmer 77×22×22mm build, not raw capability. It runs on a single CR123A battery rather than the coin cells most rivals use — bulkier in the frame, but fewer battery changes. You'll still need a Thread border router such as HA's Connect ZBT-1 or an Apple/Google hub.

At £7 from IKEA UK, this 2026 Matter-over-Thread sensor (successor to the Parasoll) is the cheapest way to cover every door and window in the house, joining Home Assistant's native Matter integration without an IKEA hub. It's genuinely discreet — 82×17×18mm, mounted with adhesive pads rather than screws, so it disappears against a white door frame. Against the Aqara Door and Window Sensor P2 (£27, officially certified Works with Home Assistant), MYGGBETT is under a third of the price for the same contact-and-battery entities. Budget buyers should start here — but read the latency note below before trusting it for anything security-critical; Aqara's mesh reports state changes more consistently.

The best all-round Zigbee PIR for UK Home Assistant users, pairing straight into Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA despite the box insisting you need an Aqara hub. At £18.99 on Amazon UK (RRP £23.99) it costs roughly double the budget SONOFF SNZB-03P, and the extra buys a wider field of view — 170° out to 2m narrowing to 150° at 7m versus SONOFF's fixed 110°/6m — plus numeric lux instead of a dim/bright enum, three-step sensitivity, and a detection interval you can set anywhere from 2 seconds upwards rather than a fixed 5-60s window. Two CR2450 cells claim 5 years against roughly 3. Against Aqara's own newer options the P1 still makes sense: the Motion and Light Sensor P2 moves to Thread/Matter, which means you need a Thread border router and, because Matter only carries the basic occupancy and light readings, its sensitivity and timeout are set in the Aqara app rather than exposed in Home Assistant; the P1 on Zigbee gives you all of that as native HA entities. The FP2 (around £58) is a different tool — a mains-powered mmWave presence sensor that keeps a room "occupied" while someone sits still and can split it into zones, but it needs a USB socket and Wi-Fi. Buy the P1 for hallways, landings, stairs and open-plan spaces where a battery PIR that fires quickly is what you want; buy an FP2 for a living room or office where people sit still; for a doorway or small room, the SONOFF does the job for less.

The most flexible flood sensor Shelly's made — pick Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Bluetooth or Matter at setup, joining whatever mesh you already run, with a 2m cable extendable to 150m for reaching under a tank or behind an appliance. For most UK Home Assistant users we'd pick Wi-Fi: it's the only mode that gets full local RPC integration via mDNS auto-discovery, no cloud, no extra Zigbee coordinator. Tuck the sensor body out of sight and run the cable to the risk point — under the sink trap, behind the washing machine hose, or along a boiler's pressure-relief pipe. Commit to one radio at pairing; you can't run several at once.

The mid-tier step below Lock Ultra: SwitchBot's own listing explicitly confirms it fits European cylinders, British oval cylinders and Swiss round cylinders, with eight cylinder adaptors included in the box — no separate adapter purchase like the cheaper original Lock. The base Bluetooth model needs no hub at all for Home Assistant, since the official switchbot integration talks to it directly over local BLE; only Lock Ultra carries the full Works with Home Assistant badge, Lock Pro uses the same core integration but isn't separately certified. It sits meaningfully above the base Lock and below Ultra on price, and adds SwitchBot's own quieter/faster motor generation plus the persistent-calibration behaviour covered below.

Officially Works with Home Assistant certified via Matter over Thread, the Pro (5th gen) uses the same retrofit-over-your-cylinder fitting as the £139 Go, but at £229 it swaps 4 AA batteries for a built-in rechargeable Li-ion pack that charges via USB-C in about 2 hours and lasts roughly 6 months per charge. The extra ~£90 also buys a Wi-Fi radio for Nuki's remote-access feature and, more usefully for HA users, a port for the optional Door Sensor accessory the Go lacks entirely. Worth it for fewer battery swaps and door-open/closed state; skip it if the Go's bare lock entity covers your needs.

The easiest retrofit curtain robot for UK rented homes — it clips onto your existing rod or U-rail with no tools or hub needed for local Bluetooth control from Home Assistant. This Rod variant handles curtains up to 15kg on rods 15-40mm in diameter (the U-rail version, sold separately, pushes 16kg on U-shaped tracks instead) — check your rail type before buying, since the two aren't interchangeable. The 3350mAh battery lasts roughly 8 months per charge on one cycle a day; add the optional solar panel and you'll never touch the charging cable again. Best for south-facing windows where that panel earns its keep.

How to read the labels

Native integration means Home Assistant ships the integration itself. Works with HA means the maker certifies it. HACS component and Zigbee2MQTT / ZHA are community routes you set up yourself, and they can break when the maker changes something. Cloud integrationmeans the device only works through the maker's service.

Local controlmeans Home Assistant controls the device on your own network, so it keeps working if your internet or the maker's service goes down.
